An artificial lake tells the story of a railway line in Weert: the IJzeren Man was created in 1912 through sand extraction; the sand was needed for the Eindhoven–Weert railway line. Around the lake, winding waterways, forests, marshland and walking trails shape the landscape. Its origins connect today’s waterscape with the construction of the railway line.

From the lake to a cross-border nature area

The KempenBroek also extends across the municipality of Weert. This cross-border area includes marshes, stream valleys, heathland and agricultural areas. On 5 July 2024, UNESCO recognised KempenBroek as the first cross-border UNESCO Man and Biosphere area in the Benelux countries. The designation highlights a landscape that extends beyond a single municipality.

In the KempenBroek, you can hike, cycle, mountain bike, go horseback riding or take a carriage ride. These activities complement the walking trails around the IJzeren Man. If outdoor activities are a priority when planning your trip, you can choose between the lake area and the larger cross-border nature area. The landscapes and activities of the KempenBroek offer more than views of water and forest: heathland, marshes, stream valleys and agricultural land are also part of the area.

Archaeology and local history

The Boshoverheide urnfield offers a different perspective on Weert. It is considered the largest urnfield in north-western Europe and includes more than 3,100 burial mounds. The site is protected and managed as a Rijksmonument and as a Natura 2000 site under the Habitats and Birds Directives. Its size, archaeological significance and protected status make Boshoverheide a notable destination for anyone interested in history and landscape conservation.

In the heart of Weert is Museum W, a cultural history museum in a restored historic building: the former town hall. Its former role as a town hall and its current use as a museum give the building a clear connection to local history. Here, culture and architectural history come together in a building whose former purpose is part of its identity.

Events and performances

The official 2026 events page lists a number of traditions for the Kermis Weert, including the official opening, the fairground mass in the bumper cars, fairground prizes, a low-sensory fair and a closing fireworks display. The Munttheater offers a different focus. Its programme for the 2026/27 season includes cabaret, music, family performances, shows, theatre lectures and classical performances. Alongside professional ensembles and well-known artists, the programme also features emerging talent and regional productions from Weert and the surrounding area. If you would like to attend a performance, check the dates for the show you want to see.

Mills, water and practical information

In Swartbroek, the De Hoop mill regularly operates as a production mill: it processes wheat, rye and buckwheat, producing flour for consumption. Its design is also striking: the combination of a wooden octagonal body and a gallery is unique in Limburg. As operations may change, check the current milling schedule before your visit.

The Sint Annamolen Keent has a small mill shop selling various kinds of artisan flour, honey, jam, syrup and linseed oil. The products make a visit to the mill an opportunity to discover local produce; availability may change, so check the current selection in advance. Weert also has a visitor marina with 22 berths on the Zuid-Willemsvaart.

Kinderboerderij De IJzeren Man is another specific place to visit, especially for children: they can walk among the animals and pet them. The petting zoo is wheelchair accessible and has an accessible toilet. One important detail for planning your visit is that access is only possible on foot or by bicycle. This information can help you take different interests and practical requirements into account when choosing things to do in Weert.
