Mook en Middelaar lies between the Meuse and the Mookerheide. Woodlands and heathland, a glacial push-moraine landscape and cultural-historical heritage shape the character of the municipality. This gives you plenty of ways to shape your stay: follow paths through the landscape, look for Roman traces or explore the area’s mills and castle history.

Heathland, woodland and scenic routes

The Mookerheide is a woodland and heathland area east of Mook, in the Dutch province of Limburg. Its varied elevation offers views across the Meuse. The nature reserve of Sint-Jansberg also features a changing landscape: its ridge connects a wooded slope with a watermill, a wetland and fields. Winding paths lead over hills and along meadows, with views from higher vantage points.

One hiking option is the “Rond Jachtslot de Mookerheide” route. It passes an observation tower offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. On a bicycle, the “Mooks ommetje” offers a different perspective on the area: this 23.5-kilometre route starts and ends at Herberg Restaurant 't Zwaantje in Mook and takes you through forests, open fields and along the Meuse. Along the way, it passes atmospheric villages and historic places. You can choose between different ways of exploring: a walking route with an observation tower or a longer cycling tour through varied landscapes.

Roman traces and historic sites

The remains of a Roman villa lie on Sint-Jansberg. It is considered the largest civilian building from Roman times found in the Netherlands; the main building measured about 84 Ă— 22 metres. Since 1978, the site has been a legally protected archaeological monument. A pipe structure makes its history visible above ground.

The Meuse is also part of the area’s Roman history. In the fourth century AD, the Romans built a bridge over the river near Cuijk and Middelaar. Its remains are among those of only two Roman bridges found in the Netherlands. An information board with an artwork about the discovered bridge stands by the Meuse at Middelaar.

Mills and castle history

The Bovenste Plasmolen dates back to 1725. It was initially used for paper-making for more than 100 years; in 1846, it was converted to grind and hull grain. As a double-powered watermill, its waterwheel can be driven by water from both below and above. This technical feature adds a vivid detail to its long history of use.

Jachtslot Mookerheide was built in the Art Nouveau style in 1904. Guided tours are available for individuals and groups; take the booking arrangements into account when planning your visit. The Jachtslot also serves coffee, lunch, drinks and dinner every day. As this offering may change, it is a good idea to check the latest information before your visit.

Relaxing at the Mookerplas

The Mookerplas, also known locally as “De Siep”, is openly connected to the Meuse, and boats can be launched there. The recreational area offers opportunities for boating, fishing and walking. Facilities include a sandy beach, a sunbathing lawn, play equipment and several places to eat and drink.

The Mookerplas also has wheelchair-accessible entrance gates and parking spaces for people with a disabled parking permit. If this information is important for your plans, check the latest details before your visit. This makes it easy to include the available waterside activities in your trip plans without confusing them with the region’s walking and cultural experiences.
