Zuidwolde combines a historic esdorp with a varied landscape and trails that offer different points of focus. Here, local history, insect watching and nature in the surrounding area come together, providing a varied basis for planning your trip.

The village and landscape around Zuidwolde

Zuidwolde is an esdorp on a ridge that formed during the penultimate Ice Age. On this ridge, the Esbosjes Zuidwolde form a varied landscape: old copses, hedgerows and rows of trees alternate with herb-rich fields and nutrient-poor grassland. A butterfly species has been observed in Drenthe only in the Esbosjes Zuidwolde.

Southeast of the village lies the heathland area of Zwarte Gat and De Slagen, with a large peat lake. The Reestdal around Zuidwolde offers another perspective on the landscape: estates, heathland, woodland and grassland in the stream valley are all part of the scenery, as are farms along the River Reest. These landscapes offer different aspects of nature, and not all the trails have the same character.

Walking trails and a cycling route with different points of focus

The Vlinderommetje Zuidwolde is a ten-kilometre circular walking trail around the village. It focuses especially on butterflies, dragonflies and other insects; wild plants and birds can also be seen along the way. It offers a specific option for anyone who wants to combine a walk with nature watching.

Wooden posts with the yellow route logo mark the Vlinderommetje. The information boards regularly tell you about local attractions. Parts of the circular route are suitable for wheelchair users and pushchairs; in some places, an adapted route is provided. The starting point is a few minutes’ walk from the Molenweg bus stop. As routes and stops may change, check current services when planning your trip.

Longer walks also pass through the Esbosjes: stages 6 and 7 of the long-distance “Loop van de Reest” trail run alongside and through them. For cycling, there is a different kind of option: the Wiede Wold Fietsroute is 70 kilometres long, follows the cycling network’s junction system and can be divided into two shorter circular rides.

Museum, architectural history and events

Every year, Museum de Wemme displays a new selection from its collection of 54 historic handcarts. The size of the collection may change. The museum offers a glimpse into a collection that differs from the nature themes of the walking trails.

Notable buildings include the present-day Hervormde kerk on Hoofdstraat, completed in 1823. The Meule van Wassens was shipped to Zuidwolde and rebuilt there as a grain mill in 1878, on a mill mound. These two dates help distinguish different chapters in the village’s history.

The Vlindertuin in Zuidwolde was created in 1998 as part of the VLINDER-2000 project. It aims to inform residents and visitors about insects, especially butterflies. Nearby, an open-air theatre hollow lies in the middle of Faliebergbos, at the foot of the hill; free outdoor performances are held there. If you plan to attend a performance, check the current dates in advance.

During the Reestdaltocht, dozens of authentic horse-drawn carriages and wagons travel through Zuidwolde and the surrounding area. If this type of event matters to your trip, check the date before making plans.

Regional products for planning your trip

De Boerenstreek in Zuidwolde sells regional products from short supply chains. These include cheese and dairy products, fruit and vegetables, eggs, nuts, honey, rapeseed oil, and beef, chicken and pork. It is a place to buy regional produce, not a designated tasting or workshop. The range and opening hours may change; check them before planning a specific shopping trip.

Zuidwolde therefore offers several distinct options for planning your trip: the history of the esdorp and its historic buildings, the museum collection, and walking and cycling options with different lengths and themes. You can decide which to focus on based on the time available and your interests.
