Veeningen combines rural architectural history and medieval settlement development with two walking routes that differ markedly in character. The Belevingspad features play and exercise stations along the route, while the Voetveer Veeningen route combines open countryside with a crossing by passenger ferry. These contrasts offer clear guidance when choosing your stay: you can focus on local history, the Belevingspad’s stations or the ferry walk.
Farmhouses and Village History
Veeningen 42 is a large 19th-century farmhouse with a rear gate, a hipped roof partly covered with tiles and partly with thatch, and an attached barn. Veeningen 44 also dates from the 19th century; this farmhouse also has a rear gate and a hipped roof partly covered with tiles and partly with thatch. Veeningen 44 has Rijksmonument status. The farmhouses share the same roof shape and rear gate, while Veeningen 42 also has an attached barn.
The settlement’s history dates back to the Middle Ages: Veeningen developed as an esdorp, a village with communal arable fields, on elevated sandy ground in the peatland west of Zuidwolde. Oud-Veeningen followed a different course: its original settlement layout was preserved because the new village center was built separately. Thus, Veeningen’s medieval origins and Oud-Veeningen’s preserved layout represent two distinct historical aspects. Outside Veeningen, on Willem Moesweg, is New Greenwich Village, an old Saxon open-air museum farm complex.
Two Walking Routes, Two Different Focal Points
The Belevingspad in Veeningen starts at a playground with slides, swings and a zip line. Arrows point to an insect hotel, a sports box, wooden animals, tree houses and climbing ropes. This sequence of clearly identified stops gives the route a playful, activity-focused character. After a few kilometers, the playground comes back into view in the distance—a striking moment along the way. If you enjoy making your way to individual points of interest on a walk, you can take these route features into account when choosing.
The Voetveer Veeningen walking route passes through open agricultural landscapes, old hamlets, meadows and waterways. The route includes a crossing on the Fort-Veeningen passenger ferry; the starting point is at Dorpshuis 't Markehuus in Veeningen. Compared with the Belevingspad, the landscape and ferry define this route. Check the ferry timetable before setting off so you can factor the crossing into your plans.
Equestrian Sports and Event Dates
Equestrian sports are a specific event-related attraction. The 2026 edition of CH de Wolden – CSI Zuidwolde was a two-week equestrian event, with the competition address at Veeningen 1 in Veeningen. The De Wolden Summer Sale is a regular, recurring part of the CSI de Wolden program. For 2026, its offering included 21 bred show-jumping foals on July 25. The date and offering apply to this edition; check the dates for the relevant program before planning a future trip.
