Historic churches, trails of varying lengths and pear traditions shape the ways you can explore Ruinerwold. When planning your trip, you can choose your own focus: churches and memorial sites, a walk steeped in local history, or a visit during blossom season and the Stoofperenfeest. The farm museum, guided tours and distinctive regional treats are also possible themes for your stay.

Churches and memorial sites

The Bartholomeuskerk has a single-manual organ built by P. van Oeckelen in Harenermolen in 1872. The Bartolomeüskerk has a 17th-century pulpit. Blijdenstein’s parish church was first mentioned in a document in 1152, which confirmed the gifts made to the church by Utrecht Bishop Hartbert (1139–1150). These three details offer different points of historical interest, without limiting your visit to church architecture.

A memorial on Hardenweg commemorates the seven crew members of the Halifax MKII JD314 bomber. The aircraft crashed on 29 December 1943, after being shot down by a German night fighter. An annual memorial service is held in the church opposite on 4 May. A silent procession then proceeds to the grave of the six men who died, where flowers and wreaths are laid.

Walking trails of varying lengths

“Blik op de Kerk” is a figure-eight walking trail centred on the church in Blijdenstein. The shorter loop is four kilometres long and the longer one eight kilometres. You can start at the church car park; another starting point is the Vorenwolde bus stop, served by bus route 32. The two distances let you choose how far you want to walk, without assuming a particular walking time or level of difficulty.

The route follows the Dooddijk. In the past, funeral processions used this road to reach the church; there was also a former gallows site here. The Landscape Stories Route is described as approximately 13 kilometres long and starts and ends at Museumboerderij De Karstenhoeve. Another Landscape Stories Route, about eight kilometres long, starts and ends at the church in Blijdenstein. The distances and respective starting and finishing points give you a clear basis for comparing the routes as you plan your trip.

The landscape also tells a story of how it has been used: the strip-field landscape is defined by kilometres of drainage ditches and long plots extending from the sandy ridge along today’s Dr. Larijweg. The Wold Aa and Koekanger Aa meet in a small section of the Natuur Netwerk Nederland. These features offer a different perspective on the destination from its historic churches and memorial sites.

Farms, pears and regional traditions

Museumboerderij De Karstenhoeve is an authentic 17th-century farm that has been used as a museum for 60 years. Guided tours of the farm explain proverbs and sayings that originated there. The “koffie met Roeffie” served there includes pear cake, pear liqueur and a Roeffie baked according to the recipe of Ruinerwoldse Roeffie. This visit brings together the farm’s history and a taste of the region.

The pear season offers two different reasons to plan a trip: in April, about 1,400 pear trees blossom along Dr. Larijweg beside the old farmhouses. The Stoofperenfeest takes place on the first Saturday in October. Around 1,200 pear trees laden with cooking pears are auctioned along the road; farms host market stalls, food trucks and activities focused on rural and homemade products. Spring blossom and the autumn festival therefore offer different experiences at different times of year.

More activities and choosing accommodation

The Blotevoetenpad at Het groene geschenk features a letter scavenger hunt and a maze for all ages. You can combine it with candle-making workshops at the neighbouring Kaarsenrecycling Het tweede lichtje, including workshops for taper candles, candles in jars and mosaic candles. If you want to do both, plan your workshop visit around your schedule. At the Buitengoed Weerwille pitch-and-putt course, you can play without a golf certificate.

Opoe’s Erfenis on Dijkhuizen is a shop and museum featuring kitchen textiles and old-Dutch sweets. Check visitor access before making this a fixed stop in your plans. This lets you choose hotels in Ruinerwold to suit the purpose of your trip, without turning the different activities into a set itinerary.
