Echten combines routes through woodland and heathland with opportunities for walking and cycling, as well as historic buildings and exhibitions. The routes vary considerably in length – from an experience trail of about one kilometre to a signposted 13-kilometre walking route.

Woodland, heathland and a geological monument

The Echtenerveld nature area lies north of Echten. It consists mainly of woodland, heathland and peatland, and also includes the Hunnenkloosterberg. The meltwater hill, formed after the Ice Age, was designated a Geological Monument in 2022. An open, heather-covered area in the woodland is a distinctive feature of its landscape. Different natural environments therefore meet in the Echtenerveld; the Hunnenkloosterberg adds a geological point of interest to the landscape.

Two walking trails, different distances

The approximately one-kilometre Roekpad leads through the Kraaienbosch and around a small lake. On this experience and sensory trail, you can climb and scramble; natural play equipment is located along the route. Information signs also include Braille for children and adults with visual impairments.

For a longer walk, take the signposted Echtener Esch route: it is 13 kilometres long and leads around Echten and through the Boswachterij Ruinen. The route starts at Plattelandswinkel ’t Huus met de Belle, where ample parking is available. It is not easily accessible by public transport. The route is marked with white hexagonal signs bearing brown lettering. As information about the route start may change, check the starting point and parking options before setting out.

The main differences are the distance and the character of the route: the Roekpad is a short experience and sensory trail with natural play equipment, while the Echtener Esch is a signposted walking route around Echten. You can plan your outing according to the time available and whether you are looking for a compact trail or a longer walk.

Cycling and nearby landscapes

The Echtenerroute runs along the Esch village of Echten and through the valley of the Echtenerstroom stream. In principle, it is also suitable for extra-wide bicycles such as tricycles and cargo bikes, provided you take the narrow bridge into account. If you are travelling on a wide bike, be sure to factor this into your planning.

The Echtenerzand dune complex is located in the nearby Boswachterij Ruinen. It includes a peat lake area. Echtenerzand is a distinct landscape feature in the area; by contrast, the information about the Echtenerroute describes its course along the Esch village and through the Echtenerstroom valley.

Manor-house history and local culture

The historical dates associated with Huis te Echten range from its earliest documentary mention to its surviving architecture: the former havezate was mentioned in official documents as early as the 12th century. The history of the block-shaped manor house dates back to the 15th century; the present front façade was built in 1808. These dates mark different stages in its history and give the site a clear architectural heritage focus.

Another historic setting is the Witte Villa in Echten. It was built in 1914 for the noble Van Holthe tot Echten family; Tea Time moved into the building in 2012. The original room layout has been preserved. Guests can sit in the Drawing Room, Study, Dining Room and renovated Conservatory. At Tea Time, the English theme is reflected not only on the menu, but also in the gift shop, the tableware and the staff uniforms.

’t Huus met de Belle is housed in a former sheep barn and serves as a tourist information point. Regional products, crafts, applied art and art from Echten and the wider area are sold there. The art and nature route also starts there. Changing exhibitions of paintings and sculptures are held at Gallery Freek Berend. In Echten, nature trails, architectural history and local art therefore offer distinct highlights for your stay.
