Koekange combines an elongated village layout, shaped by the reclamation of peatland, with listed buildings. It also has a museum with an unusual collection, traditional festival features, and recurring walking events. As you plan your visit, consider whether you would most like to get to know the village through its architectural history, its museum, or its events.

A village whose layout tells a story

Koekange emerged in the Middle Ages as marginal peatlands were reclaimed. This development continued into the 16th century and gradually shifted southward. The slow growth in this direction led to the village’s elongated layout. The strip-like development of the area from the dike also shaped the division of the land into plots, resulting in elongated parcels. The village layout and the division of the parcels thus tell different aspects of the same landscape’s development: the village’s expansion and the division of the reclaimed land.

Monuments from different periods

The Dutch Reformed Church at Kerklaan 20 is a Rijksmonument (national heritage site) and dates largely from 1834. Boerderij Welgelegen in Koekange is also designated a Rijksmonument; its residence was built in 1881 in the eclectic style. The two buildings show how much the historic buildings in the village differ in age.

At Dorpsstraat 68 stands a farm built in 1911 in the Art Nouveau style, based on a design by G. Otten Jzn. of Meppel. The small farmhouse at Eggeweg 23 dates from the 19th century. Its hipped roof is partly covered with tiles and partly with thatch; it also has an Uilebord (a traditional Frisian gable ornament). Alongside the church, Koekange thus offers a range of rural architectural styles.

A cross-shaped natural-stone memorial stands on Dorpsstraat. It commemorates all fellow citizens who lost their lives during the war in the former Dutch East Indies and also serves as a general memorial to the Second World War. The memorial thus has a specific commemorative purpose while also honoring the wider memory of the war.

The Blikmuseum and its collection

At Landgoed Welgelegen, the Blikmuseum displays around 2,000 tin cans, including cans from Dutch brands and an old steam locomotive made of tin cans. The collection offers a distinct focus alongside the village’s architectural history, centering on tin cans as everyday objects and collectibles. Groups can visit the museum year-round by appointment. Arrange a group visit with the museum in advance.

Festivals and walking events

The Koekanger Feest includes an annual church service. There is also traditionally a bicycle quiz tour through the surrounding area, starting at the Dorpshuis De Schakel, as well as a parade through the village. The Highland Games in Koekange feature strength events such as caber tossing, carrying milk churns, shot put, and tug-of-war. Check the dates and program for the relevant year before planning your trip around them.

The recurring “Van Schakel tot Schakel” walking event offers another way to explore the surrounding area on foot. It includes several routes through the area around Koekange. Unlike the festival events, it focuses on a range of walking routes; check the dates separately for the relevant year.

Eating in Koekange

The De Hooiberg country restaurant serves lunch, dinner, and drinks, as well as coffee and something sweet. If you plan to stop there, check the current opening hours before your visit.
