In Glodeni District, extensive river landscapes, wetlands and distinctive rock formations meet along the Prut. A defining natural area is Pădurea Domnească Nature Reserve. It stretches for 40 kilometres along the Prut and across Glodeni and Fălești districts. The reserve’s species profile includes 47 mammal species, 15 reptile and amphibian species, and 159 bird species. Of these three groups, birds are the most numerous, making them a prominent feature of the species profile.

Prut floodplain and birdlife

A distinctive landscape unit is Țara Bâtlanilor, a forested wetland in the oak woodland of the Prut floodplain. It lies 3 kilometres from the village of Balatina and 0.8 kilometres from the Prut riverbed. Three waterbird species nest in trees there: the grey heron, little egret and night heron. During the breeding season, access to the colony is severely restricted under strict protection measures to avoid disturbing the birds. This restriction is an important part of planning a visit.

Water bodies and rock formations

The bodies of water have their own notable features. The relict lake La Fontal covers 24.2 hectares and is the largest water body in the entire Pădurea Domnească Nature Reserve. The old Prut river branch Potcoava covers 9.1 hectares; its average depth is 1.9 metres, reaching 3.8 metres at its deepest points. The oxbow lake is separated from the Prut. The area figures can be compared directly: La Fontal is more than twice the size of Potcoava. Potcoava’s deepest points are 1.9 metres below its average depth.

Rock formations bring other dimensions into view. Stânca Mare lies south of Cobani and is over 1,000 metres long, 100 metres wide and 40 metres high. The reef Uriașul in Cheile Butești is over 2,000 metres long, 125 metres wide and 40 metres high. Both formations reach the same height, but differ in their stated length and width.

Culture and travel information

Culture also has specific points of reference. The wooden church in the village of Cobani is a protected cultural heritage site that reflects the region’s cultural identity. In Glodeni, the Festival of Ethnicities “Unitate prin diversitate” was held on 15 September 2023 for the city day. A protected building and a dated festival thus serve as distinct cultural points of reference.

For overnight stays, the “La Fontal” eco-tourism guesthouse is a specific option: it offers 12 beds in two cottages. The guesthouse is in Cobani, in Glodeni District, and is the first stop in the northern region. Nearby are the natural monuments “Suta de Movile”, “Stânca Mare” and “Cheile Butești”. If you plan to stay here, check availability for your travel dates.

The N12 tourist route offers a broader route perspective. It runs from Chișinău via Glodeni, Cobani and Butești, then back to Chișinău. N12 therefore connects these places in a specific sequence that you can use to orient yourself when travelling around the region.
