Wetlands and lakes

At Lake Beleu, a distinctive landscape and a diverse habitat come together. The Lower Prut Nature Reserve protects wetlands and lakeshore habitats around the lake and the Prut River. Lake Beleu is a remnant of the Danube’s freshwater estuarine landscape and covers 628 hectares. It is home to more than 27 fish species and nine amphibian species. Lower Prut lies along an important migration route and serves as a breeding area as well as a significant stopover and wintering site. The area is designated in the Natura 2000 network as a Site of Community Importance (SCI) and a Special Protection Area (SPA).

Lake Manta also sets a benchmark: at 2,100 hectares, it is the largest lake in the Republic of Moldova. By comparison, Lake Beleu covers 628 hectares. The “Prutul de Jos” Scientific Reserve lies in the Prut floodplain west of Slobozia Mare and includes Lake Beleu.

Two trails, different time requirements

The “Panorama Beleului” trail offers viewpoints over Lake Beleu and the nature reserve, and is suitable for hiking and exploring nature. It is approximately 5 kilometres long and can be completed in 1.5 to 2 hours. The “Dealul Cămilei” trail starts in Văleni, is about 2.5 kilometres long, and can be completed in approximately 60 minutes with moderate effort. It connects nature with the history and traditions of the region.

The two trails are easy to distinguish by distance and time required: “Dealul Cămilei” is the shorter option, while “Panorama Beleului” takes more time and offers viewpoints over the lake and nature reserve. This lets you choose a suitable timeframe for your exploration while keeping the trails’ different highlights in mind.

The water route in the Lower Prut Nature Reserve offers a different perspective. When water levels are suitable, small groups can travel by boat from the Manolescu Channel to the lake. Here, water levels are the decisive factor; the two hiking trails, by contrast, differ mainly in their length, duration and themes.

Museums and regional history

The Muzeul Ținutului Cahul was founded on 30 July 1958 and began operating on 1 August 1958. Its collections comprise around 40,000 objects related to history, natural sciences and ethnography. In Slobozia Mare, the themed rooms of the History and Ethnography Museum are dedicated to Lake Beleu, the history of the village and traditional craft objects.

Casa dorului is a house museum furnished in the style of the 19th century, with a large living room, a kitchen and a sitting area. The Complexul Etnografic offers a different insight: this open-air museum includes a farmhouse, a barn and a forge dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, and opened in 1979. Together, these sites showcase different ways of experiencing history and everyday culture—from museum collections and crafts to historic homes and farm buildings.

The Muzeul Pâinii in Văleni also combines a visit with regional food and drink. The visitor program includes lemon balm tea, cold mint with bee honey, as well as cozonac and Burnăcei baked on the hearth. Check before your visit whether this offering is currently available.
