Csopak combines an informative walk with a history of wine-growing and several viewpoints across the landscape. The Pele Trail focuses on wildlife tracks, bodies of water, plants and geological history; Csopak’s wine-growing tradition is reflected in a special designation for local wine and in the Csopaki Kódex. There is also a historic wine cellar, a local history collection and traces of the area’s earlier history. This lets you explore Csopak according to your interests in nature, wine and culture.
Nature Trails, the Nature Trail and Views
The Pele Trail in Csopak is an interactive, playful nature trail about wildlife that leaves tracks in the local environment. It also introduces indicators of stream pollution and features 30 species of woody plants and herbaceous plants. Visitors can also learn about geological events in the Balaton Uplands over the past 500 million years. The topics thus range from observing nature to the long-term development of the landscape.
The 30-minute walk is freely accessible every day; on weekdays, you can request a knowledgeable guide. Check seasonal arrangements before your trip. The Csákány-hegyi Kilátó lookout tower offers views of the Bakony Mountains and the eastern basin of Lake Balaton.
A Cycling Break by Lake Balaton
The Csopak section of the Balatoni Bringakörút includes the Madárles és kerékpáros pihenő ecological cycling rest area. The site has a nature trail and play equipment. From the bird-watching platform there, visitors can look out over the reed beds and Lake Balaton towards Paloznak and Alsóörs. The rest area, nature trail and viewpoint offer different features, without necessarily serving the same purpose.
Wine Tradition and Tóth Pince
The traditional designation Csopaki refers to a wine made from Olaszrizling grapes. This grape variety has shaped Csopak’s vineyards since the late 19th century. In 2012, Csopak’s winemakers founded the Csopaki Kódex to protect local wine-growing and wine culture, as well as the good reputation and outstanding quality of the traditional Csopaki wine.
Tóth Pince offers wine tastings and wine sales at the cellar throughout the year; both are available by prior appointment only. The stone-vaulted cellar, with clay mortar between the stones, was built in 1837. A small local history exhibition with a wine collection is located in the attic. On display are traditional tools and household objects used by reed cutters, winemakers, winegrowers, blacksmiths and coopers, as well as a unique set of shoemaker’s tools and kitchen items from the early 20th century, from a family inheritance and collection.
Buildings and Local History
The Angolkisasszonyok nyaralója was the holiday home of the Sisters of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary for their teachers and was built around the turn of the 20th century. Plul Mill is a building preserved as an industrial monument and houses a local history collection. These two buildings offer distinct historical perspectives alongside the wine-growing history of Tóth Pince.
Csopak’s sights also include fountains built at the springs. Both ordinary drinking water and carbonated spring water emerge in Csopak; not all the fountains have retained their original function. Together with the nature trail, viewpoints and historic buildings, they offer a range of subjects to explore during your stay, from landscape and natural history to wine and local history.
