At the Tapolca Lake Cave, discovery begins underground: visitors can take a boat ride on the illuminated, bluish-shimmering water of the underground lake. The strictly protected cave was discovered more than 100 years ago. This experience brings together natural history and a journey through the world of caves.

Caves, Hiking Trails and Views

The Tapolca Lake Cave Visitor Centre includes an exhibition on the fascinating world of karst regions. It complements the boat ride with an insight into a type of landscape that also plays a role elsewhere in Wesprim. The exhibition and the boat ride offer different ways to explore the subject: the underground cave takes centre stage here, while the karst region as a whole is the focus there.

Marked hiking trails lead from Zånka and Monoszló to HegyestƱ Hill. Check the trail markers and access conditions before setting out. The HegyestƱ Geological Visitor Site offers panoramic views of Lake Balaton, the Tihany Peninsula, the Kåli Basin and the Tapolca Basin. This lets you see the landscape from a different perspective than in the cave: instead of the underground lake, the view opens up here across several named landscapes.

LĂłczy Cave also offers a practical starting point for planning. From the centre of BalatonfĂŒred, you can reach it in about five minutes by car or about 30 minutes on foot via green-marked hiking trails. These times are approximate and may vary.

Lakes and Geological Formations

The Tihany Peninsula divides Lake Balaton into two basins. Its Outer Lake is considered a paradise for waterbirds. It also has a history of nature conservation: in 1952, the peninsula became Hungary’s first nature reserve. Anyone interested in landscapes and wildlife will find both a distinctive lake and an early protected area here.

Geological formations and viticulture shape Badacsony’s regional character. The 438-metre-high volcanic cone lies in the Tapolca Basin and has hiking trails and panoramas for walkers. Its striking basalt organ pipes are another distinctive feature of the landscape. A special grape variety is also grown on the slopes, producing Badacsony wine. The geological formations and the wine tradition are two different aspects of the same place; this does not imply that wine is available or that tastings are offered.

History and Discoveries in Veszprém

VeszprĂ©m Castle was built on the castle hill in the 10th and 11th centuries. Cloisters and Gardens offers another perspective on the region’s cultural heritage: the complex includes two cloisters dating from the ÁrpĂĄd era. Both monuments have been renovated and can once again be visited via the landscaped walkway. The castle points to the city’s early history, while the cloisters highlight the architecture and heritage of the ÁrpĂĄd era.

The Rovaniemi Stairs lead from Veszprém Valley up to Gulya Hill. They are set into a steep slope covered with trees and bushes and run alongside a playground. This route connects two named places; the description of the slope and its location next to the playground also gives a concrete picture of its course.

At Veszprém Zoo, the African Savannah playground features zip lines, climbing frames, bouncy castles and a zebra-shaped plane with safari-style stripes. In addition, the Zoopedagógia educational events give children useful knowledge about environmental and animal protection. A play area equipped with play structures and an educational programme on nature and animal protection are therefore presented as distinct offerings. Check which events are currently taking place before your visit.

Wesprim can thus be discovered from different perspectives: underground on the lake in Tapolca Lake Cave, with far-reaching views at HegyestƱ or Badacsony, and through the historic sites in Veszprém. When choosing what to explore, consider whether you would rather focus on geological features, waterbirds, hiking landscapes or cultural heritage.
