Balatonudvari brings together two beaches, golf, and a site of cultural and historical significance with a distinctive feature: the protected cemetery with heart-shaped tombstones. The different beach locations are a good starting point for finding your way around the town.
Beach locations and water activities
Balatonudvari Községi Strand is in the eastern part of Balatonudvari, near the town center. Fövenyesi Strand is in the Fövenyes district. Both are flat and have no stairs. So, when choosing a beach, you can first consider its location: close to the center or in the Fövenyes district.
Pedal boats, kayaks, and SUP boards are available for seasonal rental at Balatonudvari Községi Strand. If you plan to use one of these rental options, check before your visit whether it is available on your travel dates. This lets you factor the seasonal activity into your plans without assuming it is available year-round.
Cycling near Fövenyes
The Balatoni Bringakör runs near Fövenyesi Strand, on the opposite side of the railway line. If you plan to combine cycling and beach time, take this location into account when planning your route.
Golf and landscape
Balaton Golf Club in Balatonudvari has an 18-hole golf course. The club’s landscape includes four lush fairways with varied greens, ponds, and vineyard areas with stately pine trees. This makes golf a distinct attraction alongside Balatonudvari’s beaches; these landscape features also describe the surroundings of the course.
The cemetery and its legend
The protected cemetery with heart-shaped tombstones is one of four protected cemeteries in Hungary. A local legend passed down in Balatonudvari tells of a stonemason whose beloved drowned in Lake Balaton. According to the legend, he made a heart-shaped tombstone for her; afterward, the villagers made similar stones for their deceased. Thus, the striking motif of the tombstones is linked to a local story that is specifically passed down as a legend.
More topics in the wider destination
The wider destination of Northern Lake Balaton also offers its own nature and exhibition attractions. Boat trips are available in Tapolcai-tavasbarlang, and there is also the guided “Csodálatos karszt” exhibition. The cave is part of a system beneath the town that has so far been explored for 14.6 kilometers.
Northern Lake Balaton also includes Hegyestű, a 337-meter-high mountain between Zánka and Monoszló. There, the inside of a basalt volcano that was active about eight million years ago is exposed. At a viewpoint on the western edge of the quarry, visitors can identify the surrounding hills with the help of a panoramic information board. These regional examples broaden the picture with karst and volcanic geology; the beaches, golf course, and cemetery, in contrast, shape the topics described for Balatonudvari.
