Majs is shaped by two lakes of equal size and a distinctive cultural heritage. Fishing takes centre stage by the water, while local history is reflected in collection items, clothing, a monument and the strudel festival. These different themes can help you choose the focus of your stay.

The Two Lakes of Majsi halastó

Majsi halastó consists of two lakes, each covering four hectares. The first is a conventional fishing lake, where you can catch carp, grass carp, catfish and pike. The second, a recreational pond established in 2010, is home to large carp and grass carp. The bodies of water are therefore the same size, but have different names and descriptions: the first is a fishing lake, while the second is a recreational pond.

If you want to fish at the first lake, check the applicable rules and current availability in advance. The fish species and fishing opportunities listed may vary. The information about large carp and grass carp refers to the second pond; it does not indicate that the same fishing opportunities apply there.

Collections and Cultural Heritage

Burghardt-Ház houses furniture, objects, clothing, photographs and tools dating from the 19th century onwards. Majsi Német Tájház preserves the heritage of three ethnic groups: Germans, Upper Hungarians and Serbs. They lived peacefully alongside one another and remained connected to their language, culture and traditions.

At Majsi Tájház, figures display the everyday and festive clothing of the ethnic groups represented there. This makes specific forms of dress a focus alongside the shared heritage. The two houses are associated with different content: at Burghardt-Ház, you can see various objects and photographs, while Majsi Tájház presents clothing.

Monument and Strudel Festival

In 1923, the Majsi Hitközség decided to have a Szentháromság monument erected. On 9 October 2022, the monument was blessed by Esperes-Plébános László Bacsmai. The two dates mark different stages in its history: the decision to erect it and its later blessing. Majs’s strudel festival is also considered a major local event. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the event dates in advance.

More places to explore in the wider destination of Baranya

In the wider destination of Baranya, Pécs offers another historical highlight in the form of the Early Christian Necropolis of Sopianae. The necropolis includes decorated tombs from the 4th century, built as underground burial chambers with above-ground memorial chapels. Richly decorated Christian wall paintings are also part of this archaeological heritage. At the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter, local attractions include the “Golden Age of Zsolnay” and “Pink Exhibition” exhibitions, as well as an exhibition on the family and factory history. For children, there are outdoor playgrounds, an interactive lab, a planetarium, the Bóbita Puppet Theatre, a ceramic-painting workshop and classes at the Hercules Workshop. The freely accessible outdoor area can be entered and used free of charge during opening hours; check the current hours before visiting.

The Ős-Dráva Visitor Centre near Szaporca combines an interactive exhibition with a demonstration farm where practical farming takes place, as well as three themed educational trails. They offer insights into traditional farming, the Ős-Dráva Programme and wildlife along the Drava. The agricultural area features native Hungarian domestic animals, including Hungarian Grey cattle, Mangalica pigs, Hucul horses, and old breeds of sheep and poultry. The Wilderness Trail along the Old Drava adds to the nature theme with a birdwatching and bird-ringing station, a lookout point, a photo hide, a covered activity area and rest stops.

Culture, landscape and cuisine are also among the themes of the wider destination of Baranya. Siklós Castle is one of Hungary’s best-preserved military complexes and a major Renaissance building. Modernisation of the museum wing opened the previously inaccessible Gothic section to visitors. The Kikerics Panorama Trail allows visitors to walk safely along the cliff edge while protecting the park’s plant life from trampling. At the Nagyharsány Sculpture Park, the “Art in Nature” programme includes a guided tour. In Villány’s wine cellar row, visitors can go from cellar to cellar throughout the year to taste wines and delicious food.
