Roman traces on Várhegy, the local history Örökségház and a circular route around the Telelő Danube oxbow lake give Dunaszekcső a variety of attractions. To plan your trip, you can first decide whether cultural history, hiking or a published cycling route will be the deciding factor. These interests can help you structure your stay and tailor your hotel search to what you enjoy.

Roman Traces and Local History

The Roman fort of Lugio on Várhegy had an irregular quadrilateral ground plan that followed the contours of the hill, with a square tower at each corner. Excavations on Várhegy uncovered part of the fort’s limestone wall and the remains of a small, rectangular brick house with a terrazzo floor. A fragment of a bronze statue of Marcus Aurelius was also found at the fort on Várhegy.

Töröklyuk is a structure from the Ottoman period carved into the riverbank, although its origins are uncertain. The Örökségház houses a local history exhibition and an event hall. The building that now houses the Örökségház served as a church until 1810. Its former use as a church and the local history exhibition offer different ways to explore the history of the town. Visits to the Örökségház must be arranged in advance.

Walking Around the Telelő

A hiking route approximately 6.5 kilometres long runs around the Telelő, a Danube oxbow lake. The route starts and ends at Templomtér. Its approximate length offers a practical point of reference when planning a day of hiking. Check the route details locally before setting out.

Plan for the Cycling Route and Ferry Status

A published Dunaszekcső–Baja–Dunaszekcső cycling route starts at the Örökségház and includes a ferry crossing to Dunafalva. Ferry service between Dunaszekcső and Dunafalva has been suspended indefinitely for technical reasons since 19 June 2025. Check the current ferry status immediately before travelling, before factoring the crossing into your cycling plans. This lets you account for the specific restriction before relying on this part of the published route plan.

Cultural Attractions in the Broader Destination of Baranya

The broader destination of Baranya includes other distinctive cultural attractions in Pécs. The Early Christian Necropolis of Sopianae includes decorated tombs from the 4th century. They were built as underground burial chambers with above-ground memorial chapels and adorned with richly detailed Christian murals. The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter features the “Golden Age of Zsolnay” and “Pink Exhibition” exhibitions, as well as an exhibition on the family and factory history. The quarter’s freely accessible outdoor area can be entered and used free of charge during opening hours; check the opening hours when planning your visit.

Also in the broader destination of Baranya, near Szaporca, is the Ős-Dráva Visitor Centre. It features an interactive exhibition, a demonstration farming area with hands-on management, and three themed educational trails. They provide insight into traditional agriculture, the Ős-Dráva Programme and the wildlife along the Drava. The visitor centre therefore focuses on different themes from the Roman and local history attractions in Dunaszekcső.
