The Erdősmároki fishponds bring forest and water together; church architecture and the history of a historic cross complement the natural setting with local culture. This gives you three distinct interests to consider when planning your trip: landscape, fishing, and church or local history.

Forest, fishponds and route

Along the section by the Erdősmároki fishponds, the route runs beside a forest of lime trees, maples and conifers on one side, while partly marshy fishponds lie on the other. The yellow-marked Véménd–Kátoly route includes the Erdősmároki fishponds. A specific route thus meets a named mix of trees and a landscape shaped by ponds. If both forest and water are important to you when choosing a destination, this offers a tangible connection with nature.

Fishing at Erdősmároki Horgásztó

Erdősmároki Horgásztó adds a fishing opportunity to the natural setting. Its surface area is about 8 hectares, and the lake is in a natural setting. You can fish from purpose-built platforms or from easily accessible spots along the shore. When choosing a fishing spot, you can decide between a platform and the shore. A designated car park is located right at or near the entrance; check its current availability before your visit. As local fishing regulations may change, please check the rules in force before fishing.

Church architecture and local history

The Szent Lukács evangélista templom was built in Erdősmárok in 1882. Its façade features coloured depictions of the symbols of the four Evangelists; symbols of the Evangelists are also carved into the church doors. The motif therefore appears on two different parts of the church, while the year of construction places the building in its historical context.

A historical church record also mentions a statue of Mary Magdalene in the Erdősmárok filial congregation of the Himesháza parish. The Schwarzkopf Cross in Erdősmárok was erected in 1927 by the Schwarzkopf family after a family member returned safely from the war. The church and the cross mark two specific dates; the family story is also part of the account of why the cross was erected.

More themes in the wider travel destination of Baranya

The wider travel destination of Baranya offers other distinct cultural themes. In Pécs, the Early Christian Necropolis of Sopianae includes decorated tombs from the 4th century. They were built as underground burial chambers with above-ground memorial chapels and adorned with richly decorated Christian wall paintings. The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter in Pécs features the exhibitions “Golden Age of Zsolnay” and “Pink Exhibition,” as well as an exhibition on the history of the family and factory. Archaeological heritage and the history of the Zsolnay family represent distinct cultural highlights.

Nature and regional tradition are also among the themes in Baranya. The Ős-Dráva Visitor Centre near Szaporca offers an interactive exhibition, a demonstration farm area with hands-on farming activities, and three themed educational trails. These present traditional farming, the Ős-Dráva Programme and the wildlife along the Drava. The agricultural area features Hungarian domestic animals, including grey cattle, Mangalica pigs, Hutsul horses, and traditional sheep and poultry breeds. In Villány’s row of wine cellars, you can go from cellar to cellar throughout the year and sample wines and tasty dishes.
