Baranya reveals itself through striking contrasts: in Pécs, traces of Late Antiquity lead underground, while the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter explores art and industrial history through exhibitions and workshops. Along the Drava, the landscape and wildlife come into focus; in Villány, tasting wine and food is part of the visitor experience. The region offers a range of reasons to shape your stay around your own interests.

Discover Pécs and its cultural attractions

In Hungary, the Early Christian Necropolis of Sopianae in Pécs is one of the archaeological UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Its decorated tombs date from the 4th century. They were built as underground burial chambers with above-ground memorial chapels and adorned with richly detailed Christian wall paintings. The necropolis thus brings architecture and visual art together in one place.

The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter in Pécs features the “Golden Age of Zsolnay” and “Pink Exhibition” exhibitions, as well as an exhibition on the family and factory history. There are also several different activities for children: outdoor playgrounds, an interactive lab, a planetarium and the Bóbita Puppet Theatre, as well as a ceramics painting workshop and courses in the Hercules Workshop. The freely accessible outdoor area of the quarter can be entered and enjoyed free of charge during opening hours. Check the current opening hours before your visit.

Castle and sculpture park

Siklós Castle is one of Hungary’s best-preserved military complexes and also one of the country’s most significant Renaissance buildings. Modernisation of the museum wing opened up the Gothic section, which had previously been inaccessible to visitors. The castle therefore combines its military character and Renaissance significance with a tangible insight into the architecture of the Gothic section.

The “Art in Nature” programme at Nagyharsány Sculpture Park offers a different way to experience art: it includes a guided tour of the park. This gives your visit a clear thematic framework, while the sculptures themselves connect you with outdoor art. The Kikerics panoramic trail has a special design that allows visitors to move safely along the edge of the cliffs while protecting the park’s plant life from trampling.

Nature trails and landscapes along the Drava

Near Szaporca, the Ős-Dráva Visitor Centre offers an interactive exhibition, a demonstration farm area featuring hands-on farming, and three themed nature trails. They teach visitors about traditional agriculture, the Ős-Dráva programme and wildlife along the Drava. The agricultural area features native Hungarian domestic animals: grey cattle, Mangalica pigs, Hucul horses, and old breeds of sheep and poultry. The exhibition, trails and livestock each highlight different aspects of nature and rural life.

The Wilderness Nature Trail along the Old Drava offers another perspective on the landscape. Its facilities include a birdwatching and bird-ringing station, a viewpoint, a photo hide, a covered activity area and several rest stops. The trail combines opportunities for observing and photographing wildlife with designated places to take a break.

Wine and historic cellar rows

In Villány’s cellar row, you can go from cellar to cellar all year round, tasting wines and delicious food. This makes a visit to the town a tasting experience in which wine and food are equally part of the enjoyment. The historic cellar row in Villánykövesd offers a different appeal: it is a beautiful sight. Together, the two cellar rows show different sides of Baranya—tastings in Villány and the visual appeal of the historic complex in Villánykövesd.
