In BĂĽrgel, pottery is the focus of a permanent exhibition: the Ceramics Museum illustrates its history from its beginnings in the mid-17th century to the present day. An audio guide leads visitors to 22 stops in BĂĽrgel and ThalbĂĽrgel. If you would like to use it, check its availability before your trip.
Ceramics, Bauhaus and Dornburg Palaces
In Dornburg, too, cultural history is tied to a specific place: the Bauhaus Workshop Museum Dornburg is housed in the former Bauhaus ceramics workshop in the Marstall building of the Dornburg palace complex. Its permanent exhibition provides information about the history of the site and displays outstanding exhibits. The palace complex is also an ensemble of three palaces from different stylistic periods. The contrast with BĂĽrgel is a useful point of reference: there, the history of a craft is the focus, while in Dornburg, local history and exhibits are linked to the former workshop site.
Castles and local history
Camburg Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1166; today, only the more than 30-meter-high keep remains. The Camburg Town Museum displays exhibits spanning a long period: hand axes from the Paleolithic, tools and weapons from various cultural groups, and displays on the town’s history in the recent past. A visit to the museum thus traces a timeline from early tools to the town’s more recent history.
In Schkölen, the moated castle is a castle complex with a museum and changing exhibitions. Kemenate Orlamünde houses an exhibition on local history. Hummelshain Hunting Lodge was formerly a hunting residence of the dukes of Saxe-Altenburg. These places offer different historical perspectives: a moated castle with changing exhibitions, a local history display, and a former ducal hunting residence.
Forests, hiking trails and the Saale
The Holzland is a hilly landscape with extensive forest areas. Two different descriptions are useful for hikers: well-maintained hiking routes lead through the Zeitzgrund; the SaaleHorizontale quality hiking trail runs north to south along the Saale through the Saale-Holzland district. This offers a choice between a hiking area with several routes and a named quality trail whose course along the river is explicitly specified.
The Saale Cycle Route also runs north to south along the Saale through the Saale-Holzland district. The shared reference to the river and direction makes comparison easier: the SaaleHorizontale is designated as a quality hiking trail, while the Saale Cycle Route is a cycling route. Canoeing and inflatable-boat trips are also among the most popular outdoor activities in the Saale-Holzland district. Hiking, cycling and trips on the water thus represent different activity themes in the region.
The Gleistalhänge protected area includes Beutnitz, Graitschen, Löberschütz, Poxdorf and Tautenburg. It encompasses the former Poxdorfer Hang nature reserve, covers an area of 277.02 hectares and was designated on August 27, 1999. The protected area’s name, extent and designation date give it a clearly defined place in the natural landscape of Saale-Holzland.
