Eisenberg offers several distinct highlights: town history, Baroque architecture, historic garden design and mountain biking. The town museum, palace church and palace park provide cultural attractions; in the Eisenberg Mühltal, Trailorado is the first official mountain biking trail.
Town History and Architecture
The “Klötznersches Haus” town museum is dedicated to the history of Eisenberg's industries and associations. It also displays historical artefacts from the duchies of Saxe-Eisenberg and Saxe-Altenburg. The palace church in Eisenberg offers a different focus: it is a Baroque transverse church featuring stucco work and paintings. The museum thus focuses on the history of the town and its duchies, while the church showcases Baroque architecture.
Town Rally and Guided Tours
An interactive town rally for the whole family leads to sites connected with Eisenberg's history and uses the Actionbound app. Guided tours covering the town's history are available through the Eisenberg Information Office by prior booking and last between 1 and 1.5 hours. This gives the two formats a useful distinction for planning: the rally is app-based, while the guided tour has a specified duration and requires advance booking.
Palace Park: Protected Garden Design
Eisenberg Palace Park is a protected historic garden and an outstanding example of garden design in Thuringia. It includes the Bogengarten, which is at least 300 years old and whose fundamental elements have been preserved to this day, as well as the Baumgarten, laid out in the 19th century. The two garden areas offer different historical points of reference: the Bogengarten is notable for its age and the preservation of its fundamental elements, while the Baumgarten dates back to a layout created in the 19th century.
Mountain Biking in the Eisenberg Mühltal
Trailorado is the first official mountain biking trail in the Eisenberg Mühltal. This adds a distinct active holiday focus to the cultural attractions when planning your trip.
Culture in the Wider Saale-Holzland Destination
The wider Saale-Holzland destination offers additional, distinct cultural attractions. The Dornburg Palaces are a group of three palaces representing different stylistic periods. Schkölen Water Castle is a castle complex with a museum and changing exhibitions. In Bürgel, the permanent exhibition at the Ceramics Museum illustrates the history of Bürgel pottery from its beginnings in the mid-17th century to the present day. An audio guide leads to 22 stops in Bürgel and Thalbürgel; check whether it is available before your trip. Camburg Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1166; today, only its keep, more than 30 metres high, remains. The Camburg Town Museum displays exhibits ranging from Palaeolithic hand axes to tools and weapons from various cultural groups, as well as items relating to the town's more recent history.
Landscape and Trails in Saale-Holzland
The wider Saale-Holzland destination also offers landscapes and outdoor activities. The Holzland is a hilly region with extensive woodland, and well-maintained hiking routes run through the Zeitzgrund. The SaaleHorizontale is a quality hiking trail that runs north to south along the Saale through the Saale-Holzland district. The Saale Cycle Route also runs north to south along the river through the district. Canoeing and inflatable-boat trips are among the area's most popular outdoor activities. Saale-Holzland therefore offers a range of regional highlights: hiking, cycling and water-based trips, each with its own themes and routes.
