The Täler Pilgrim Route offers a regional way to explore village churches and landscapes; in some places, local history and architectural heritage are also part of the picture. The options range from a longer pilgrimage route to individual cultural and historical themes.

Regional Orientation and Routes

The Hügelland-Täler Administrative Community is the joint administration for 21 municipalities in the Hügelland area and the valley villages. This provides a regional framework for planning your trip; routes and cultural sites become more tangible through their specific place names.

The Täler Pilgrim Route is just under 50 kilometres long and links eight village churches in the valley villages region. Divided into seven sections, it passes through hilly countryside and small villages, some of them listed, with half-timbered houses and cottage gardens. The route thus combines its church destinations with rural architectural heritage and landscapes.

If you would rather focus on a single section than the entire route, you can take the path from Tröbnitz to Untergneus: it starts at the church in Tröbnitz and is about five kilometres long. The two distances refer to different scales—the regional pilgrimage route and a specific section. Along the Täler Pilgrim Route, there are shelters or rest areas in places including Tröbnitz. If you are planning your route, it is worth checking the current trail conditions.

Village History and Architectural Heritage

In the wider region, Christian Ludwig Brehm, known as the “Bird Pastor,” and his son Alfred Edmund Brehm, the “Father of Animals,” lived and worked in Renthendorf. Both fostered their contemporaries’ knowledge of animals and the environment. Renthendorf therefore represents a regional cultural history in which sharing knowledge about nature also played a role.

In Wolfersdorf stands the former hunting lodge “Zur Fröhlichen Wiederkunft,” a 16th-century building featuring Renaissance and Neo-Gothic styles. It provides an architectural point of interest that differs from Renthendorf’s history of knowledge.

Tröbnitz: Culture and Local History

Tröbnitz is a destination known as an arts and music village. The Tröbnitz Local History Museum opened in May 2005 in the former parish barn next to the church in Tröbnitz. The Tröbnitz and Surrounding Area Local History and Museum Association e.V. uses its rooms for exhibitions on local history.

The exhibits illustrate the lives of ordinary people in the countryside in the past. They include a simple kitchen and tools used by woodworkers, coopers, basket makers and shoemakers. Finds from excavations dating to the 17th and 18th centuries are also on display in the museum’s well house. If you are planning a specific museum visit, we recommend checking visiting options in advance.

In Tröbnitz, a Bible garden and a walk-through labyrinth also invite visitors to pause for a moment. Both offer a different focus from the exhibitions on local and everyday history.

Another Regional Destination

In Trockenborn-Wolfersdorf, the “Herzog Ernst” forest swimming pool has more than 4,000 square metres of water surface. This adds another named point of interest to the region’s themes of pilgrimage routes, history and architectural heritage.
