Gardens, Forest Trails and Hiking Routes in Jena
The Botanical Garden of the University of Jena covers 4.5 hectares and contains around 10,000 plant species. Those who want to focus on botanical diversity will find a destination in its own right here, alongside the trails through the city forest and over the shell-limestone slopes.
The approximately four-kilometre, low-climb WaldPfad Schlauer Ux circular trail runs through Jena’s city forest. It starts near the forum natura nature experience centre, passes the Forstturm, and goes by the Bismarckturm and Sternlinde. At 20 stations, children and other hikers can discover animals, trees and plants. The route is suitable for families, kindergarten groups and school classes.
The 91-kilometre SaaleHorizontale is on a different scale. It follows narrow paths through steep shell-limestone slopes and offers spectacular views of the landscape of the Central Saale Valley, with its villages, castles and palaces. As an outstanding outdoor attraction in Jena, it offers a much longer route option than the approximately four-kilometre WaldPfad. The two trails differ in length and landscape; no walking time is specified for either route.
Kulturarena as a Summer Travel Occasion
Since 1992, the Kulturarena in Jena has been a summer visitor attraction every year, drawing tens of thousands of visitors. It is therefore a recurring cultural event alongside the city’s nature and hiking attractions.
Saale-Holzland: Regional Nature and Culture
In the wider Saale-Holzland travel destination, the Holzland is a hilly landscape with extensive forest areas. Well-maintained hiking routes lead through the Zeitzgrund. The Saale Cycle Route runs north to south along the Saale through the Saale-Holzland district; canoe and inflatable-boat trips are among the area’s most popular outdoor activities.

At the Bürgel Ceramics Museum, the permanent exhibition traces the history of Bürgel pottery from its beginnings in the mid-17th century to the present day. Camburg Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1166; today, only the more than 30-metre-high keep remains. The Camburg City Museum displays exhibits ranging from Stone Age hand axes to tools and weapons from various cultural groups, as well as the town’s more recent history.
