Half-timbered houses on Alte Regensburger, a technical monument offering guided tours, and the annual street festival give Hermsdorf a distinctive character. Local history and technology can be complemented with a visit to the outdoor swimming pool. When planning, it is helpful to distinguish between the various attractions: guided tours of the Technical Collection are available by arrangement; the technical exhibit is open annually during the street festival.

Half-timbered houses, the town hall and Alt-Hermsdorf

The historic street “Alte Regensburger” has a regional character, conveyed by its half-timbered houses. The town hall also tells the story of the area’s long history: it has been standing for over 100 years. Its Baroque exterior still largely resembles its appearance when it opened more than 115 years ago. In Alt-Hermsdorf, restaurants and accommodation in carefully restored historic buildings shape the area. If you are looking for a place to stay while also considering the local surroundings, you can use this historic district as a reference point when planning.

Traditions throughout the year

The annual Maypole raising is an old tradition in the Holzland area and is also documented in some other places in the region. The first Maypole raising in Hermsdorf took place in 1854. The Hermsdorf street festival offers another opportunity to experience crafts and culture together: it has been held annually since 1993 on Open Monument Day, the second Sunday in September. Numerous craftspeople demonstrate traditional crafts there, alongside a varied cultural program. There are activities for young visitors to watch and take part in. Its regular date in the annual calendar and varied program make the festival a distinct focus for trip planning.

Technology at two addresses in Hermsdorf

The Technical Collection is housed in the Historic Town Hall at Eisenberger Straße 56, through the left-hand side entrance. Guided tours of the collection are available by arrangement, so plan your visit in advance and make arrangements beforehand. Another technical attraction is the HESCHO 40 kW high-power measuring transmitter. It has been included on the list of objects worthy of protection as a technical monument and remains at its original site on the ground floor of a building now used as a medical center at Eisenberger Straße 81. The different addresses make it easy to treat the collection and the transmitter as two separate destinations.

Guided tours of the high-power measuring transmitter include technical explanations. If needed, an insulator flashover can be demonstrated there using a 100 kV AC system. The technical exhibit is also open every year during the Hermsdorf street festival, “Alte Regensburger Straße.” The occasions for visiting therefore differ: a guided tour of the collection must be arranged in advance; at the transmitter, tours and demonstrations on request are available, in addition to its annual opening during the festival.

Getting your bearings: the outdoor pool and getting here

The Hermsdorf outdoor swimming pool has a 25-meter swimming pool and a leisure pool. These are complemented by a large water slide, a current channel, water jets and fountains. The sunbathing lawn also has a beach volleyball court and a table tennis table. The outdoor pool thus complements the historical and technical attractions with swimming pools and facilities on the sunbathing lawn.

For a broad overview of the road network: the A4 motorway from Dresden to Frankfurt/Main and the A9 motorway from Berlin to Munich intersect near Hermsdorf. Together with the various destinations in town, this provides a clear basis for choosing the focus of your stay: historic buildings, the September festival, technical tours or the outdoor pool. Prior arrangements remain important for visiting the Technical Collection; the street festival offers a separate annual opportunity to include the transmitter in your plans.
