Grönwohld is particularly easy to explore through two themes: the BahnRadWeg and the history surrounding the Drahtmühle. Route C passes through the village on its section between Trittau and Glinde. The local direction signs help with route navigation; check the route conditions before setting off. There is also information board C-1 at the Drahtmühle. This brings route navigation and a place with a long history together at one point.
Cycle paths and different route connections
When choosing a route, it is worth distinguishing it from Tour 19: near Grönwohld, Tour 19 follows historic railway lines back to Trittau. South of the village, these lines converge. The railway embankments offer views of meadows and ponds. Route C passes through Grönwohld between Trittau and Glinde; Tour 19, by contrast, describes a return route to Trittau. This information helps distinguish the two route connections.
The Drahtmühle and television history
The Drahtmühle stands at the entrance to Grönwohld and was built at the beginning of the 17th century to manufacture copper plates. It later served for paper production and was listed as a historic monument in 1972. It is considered Stormarn’s oldest surviving industrial building. The mill is privately owned and can be viewed from the outside. Check the current access conditions before your visit.
The connection to the television series “Neues aus Büttenwarder” is also part of the village’s history: Grönwohld served as a filming location for the NDR series from 1997 until it ended in 2021. The village inn is considered a filming location in the heart of Grönwohld. The Drahtmühle represents the history of industrial use, while the village inn reflects the connection to the series. Anyone familiar with “Neues aus Büttenwarder” will find another cultural point of interest in the village alongside the historic building.
Brewing culture in Grönwohld
The Grönwohlder Hausbrauerei offers brewing seminars for individuals and groups. You can sign up for brewery tours with or without a tasting. The options therefore differ both in group size and in whether a tasting is included. As availability can change, it is advisable to check dates and registration options in advance.
Büttenwarder Pils, associated with Grönwohld, is still brewed at the Grönwohlder Hausbrauerei. Special beers are bottled and kegged there. Brewery tours and seminars offer a different focus from a visit to the Drahtmühle: one is about brewing culture, the other about the building’s former industrial use. Grönwohld within the wider destination of Stormarn
Stormarn is in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region, between Hamburg and Lübeck. Stormarn has extensive woodland and moorland landscapes, as well as more than 20 circular cycling tours and railway cycle paths on disused railway lines. This regional context complements the local route connection of Route C: the route passes through Grönwohld, while the landscapes and network of circular cycling tours mentioned here describe Stormarn as the wider region.
