The Ice Age-shaped Travetal, Nütschau Monastery and historic buildings give Travenbrück several different points of interest for a stay. To help you plan, options include a trail of around five kilometres to the monastery, canoe hire on the Trave and local cultural sites. This lets you decide how much to focus on the landscape, pilgrimage route, water activities and architectural history, rather than trying to fit everything into a single outing.

The Travetal and its trails

The Travetal was formed during the Ice Age and shapes the landscape of Travenbrück; it is also widely used for local recreation. The Trave is a landmark in the area, too: the Friedensbrücke (Peace Bridge) connects the districts separated by the river. The valley, river and bridge thus offer different reference points for finding your way around the area.

A scenic walking route of about five kilometres leads from Bad Oldesloe railway station to Nütschau Monastery. It passes through Brenner Moor and follows a marked pilgrimage route. The route links a specific starting point with the monastery as its destination and can be planned as a separate walking stage. Weather and seasonal conditions can affect the state of the trail, so check conditions before setting out.

The monastery and manor house history

The area around St. Ansgar Monastery in Nütschau is considered a major visitor attraction in Travenbrück. The monastery is housed in a 450-year-old manor house and is home to the Benedictine order. It also provides youth and adult education for the Catholic Church. Thus, spiritual life and educational work sit alongside the history of the building at the same site.

The Nütschau manor house was built in 1577. It is considered the oldest surviving manor house in Stormarn and an example of a Renaissance house with three gables. The Kupfermühle in Sühlen is another local attraction: the building is a half-timbered house. Other points of interest include the watermill and the Nütschauer Schanze, as well as the castle in Tralau and the manor house in Neverstaven.

The Tralauer Madonna adds another historical detail. The oak figure belonged to the chapel at Tralau Castle; the chapel is documented in 1374. Travenbrück therefore brings together different themes in architecture and history: the Renaissance manor house in Nütschau, the half-timbered house in Sühlen and the history of the chapel in Tralau.

By car or on the Trave

To drive to the monastery, take the A21 and exit at junction 16, Bad Oldesloe-Nord/Tralau/Kloster Nütschau. Check the route and conditions before setting out. If you are planning a water activity instead of walking, canoe hire on the Trave is available in Travenbrück/Schlamersdorf. The hire service includes equipment, delivery to your chosen launch point and collection at your landing point. This lets you factor the start and end points of your canoe trip into your plans.

Staying overnight at the monastery

Nütschau Monastery offers pilgrim accommodation. If you plan to stay there, confirm availability before you travel. This lets you arrange accommodation specifically for a stay focused on the pilgrimage route and the monastery.
