The Herrenteich shows how closely Reinfeld (Holstein) connects water, routes and fish traditions. The circular route, swimming area and opportunities for non-motorized boats put the focus on the water; historic places associated with Matthias Claudius provide another point of interest. If you are looking for accommodation for a stay in Reinfeld, these different themes can help you organize your plans.

Pond landscape and circular route

The Herrenteich covers around 60 hectares and was created by damming the Heilsau. Reinfeld also has four smaller ponds and four Hellernteiche, which were formerly used for carp farming. The pond landscape is therefore also part of the local history of fishing. A four-kilometer circular route runs around the lower Herrenteich. You can plan it as a clearly defined route option for a stay that includes a walk by the water. Check current signs and accessibility before setting out.

Matthias Claudius and the history of Reinfeld

The Matthias Claudius Church is a plastered brick building dating from 1636. The local history museum displays works by Reinfeld artists from the past 100 years. Its exhibits also include a collection on the work of Matthias Claudius, as well as information about the former monastery and castle. Reinfeld thus brings together local art, literary connections and architectural history.

Other buildings are also among Reinfeld’s attractions: The rectory was built on the walls of Matthias Claudius’s birthplace. The town hall, dating from 1907, and the Privileged Pharmacy are also considered attractions. Visits to the mill museum in the Claudiushof are possible by appointment; arrange your visit in advance.

Hiking, cycling and enjoying the water

A hiking route between Reinfeld and Reinbek has existed since 1988. The 39-kilometer cycling tour “Through the Hill Country and the Trave Lowlands” also starts in Reinfeld. The four kilometers refer to the circular route around the lower Herrenteich, while the 39 kilometers refer to the cycling tour. The hiking route between the two towns is a separate option. Check current route information before setting out, as signs and accessibility may change.

There is an open, generally unlifeguarded swimming area at the Herrenteich. Non-motorized boats and SUPs can be used without a permit; however, the city must be notified. Bear this notification requirement in mind if you are planning a boat trip or SUP outing. There is a canoe launch at the mouth of the Heilsau/MĂĽhlenau where it flows into the Trave. The water-based activities therefore vary by location: swimming, non-motorized boats and SUPs at the Herrenteich, and a canoe launch at the river mouth.

Carp season and fish

Carp season opens with the Carp Festival and the draining of the Herrenteich. Event dates vary from year to year, so check them if you want to plan your visit around the event. Tench, eel, pike and trout are also marketed in Reinfeld. Which species are currently available may vary. The local fish tradition therefore includes not only the seasonal Carp Festival but also the marketing of other fish species.
