Three themes can shape a stay in Grabau: cycling along a former railway line, enjoying nature in the forest, and exploring the history of the estate, country house and chapel. You can plan your visit around a cycling route, a nature outing or historic architecture.

Cycling along a former railway line

Rail Trail Route A is a 27-kilometre cycling route from Bad Oldesloe via Grabau to Henstedt-Ulzburg. It follows the former corridor of the Elmshorn-Barmstedt-Oldesloer-Eisenbahn AG. Rail services ended in 1973; the corridor was later converted into a cycle path. The route therefore follows a former railway line through Grabau and on to its two endpoints.

Henstedt-Ulzburg station is near the end of the route. From there, train services run to Hamburg. Check timetables and access conditions before travelling. Another regional cycling tour passes through the Grabauer Forst recreation forest to Lake Grabauer See. This gives you different cycling destinations to choose from: a route between Bad Oldesloe and Henstedt-Ulzburg, or a ride through the forest to the lake.

Forest paths and nature experiences in Grabau

Naturerlebnis Grabau is freely accessible and can be explored independently; the site is reached directly via Rail Trail A. A network of paths runs through the surrounding forest. Conditions on the paths may change, so it is worth checking the latest information before your visit.

The forest nature trail has stations on forestry, alder carr, sound and birdwatching, as well as a barefoot path and trees dedicated to bats and woodpeckers. There is also a forest playground and a low ropes course. Individual stations may change. You can explore the forest in different ways: along the paths, using the themed stations, or with the additional play and activity facilities.

Erratic boulders from Stormarn District

The Grabau erratic boulder garden lies beside the cycle path and contains 30 boulders from Stormarn District. They originate from geological formations dating back to the last three ice ages. Almost all rock types found in Scandinavia are represented there; granite and gneiss predominate among the larger stones. The garden offers its own geological focus within Grabau’s cycling and nature themes: rather than architectural history or forest stations, it centres on rock types and their place in the history of the Earth.

Estate history and a variety of architectural styles

Gut Grabau is a former aristocratic estate. The manor house dates from 1804, while the estate’s roots go back to an older Meierhof. Gut Grabau is historically, artistically, urbanistically and as part of the cultural landscape significant. The country estate known as “Schloss Grabau” was built from 1906 to 1908 as a two-storey, castle-like villa in the English country house style. Its design includes elements of the English Gothic Revival and Art Nouveau.

The estate park includes a landscape park and villa garden covering around twelve hectares, a pond and two thatched pavilions. Access may be privately controlled; check access arrangements before visiting. Grabau Chapel is another part of the village’s architectural history: it is a former burial chapel dating from 1923/24, designed in neo-Gothic forms with influences from late Art Nouveau. The chapel contains a marble Madonna and Child figure by Stanislaus Cauer of Königsberg.

The different highlights are easy to distinguish when planning your visit: Route A offers a 27-kilometre cycling connection, while Naturerlebnis Grabau has forest paths and a nature trail. The estate, country house and chapel represent different chapters in the village’s history and architecture. You can decide whether cycling, nature or historic architecture will shape your stay in Grabau.
