Altenberge combines routes through the town and its surroundings with insights into local history and traditional crafts. Many kilometres of cycling and hiking trails run around and through the town. When choosing how to spend your stay, you can focus on outdoor activities, history or both.

Cycling and hiking routes for different needs

To help plan your route, the citizens’ office offers seven free cycling maps with route descriptions. For a walk that takes a manageable amount of time, try the tree trail: it leads through Altenberge and takes about an hour. This makes it easy to fit a walk with a set duration into your plans.

The Integrative Riding Trail covers a different distance: it is 25 kilometres long and has a firm, wide, barrier-free surface; it is also separated from traffic. Its five stops have parking spaces, hitching rails, water troughs, paddocks and accessible riding facilities. The short walking time for the tree trail and the length of the riding trail therefore describe two different ways to explore Altenberge.

The octagonal Dutch-style wooden windmill in Hansell is also considered a worthwhile detour on walks or cycling trips. If you would rather focus on the landscape, Borndal-Weitblick offers views north towards the Teutoburg Forest.

Local history and traditional crafts

The local history museum in the granary presents regional history and culture. Audio guides are available for the exhibits, and children can try quiz questions and puzzles. This gives visitors different ways to engage with the exhibition topics.

The historical clog workshop traces the process from tree trunk to finished wooden shoe; its machines are fully functional. Haus Sieverding is mentioned as early as the 14th century. These historical and traditional craft topics add another perspective on Altenberge to its trails and viewpoints.

Group visits

Groups can arrange a walking tour of the town during the day, provided they register in advance. Group visits to Heimathues Kittken can also be arranged during the day with advance registration. If you are planning a group trip, be sure to account for this registration requirement when scheduling.

Steinfurt as a regional setting

The wider Steinfurt destination provides a broader view of the landscape and cycling opportunities. Steinfurt District has 116 nature reserves covering a total of around 13,231 hectares, as well as 78 landscape conservation areas covering around 27,774 hectares. These area figures may change when new areas are designated.

Regional routes include the Triangel, officially opened in 2023: it is around 62 kilometres long, the first cycle superhighway in Steinfurt District, and offers fast, safe and comfortable cycling routes. The EmsRadweg runs for around 60 kilometres through the district. These details complement local routes with district-level routes, without implying a specific route through Altenberge.
