Tecklenburg offers several reasons to visit: elaborate musical productions, historic buildings and collections, activities in the spa gardens, and hiking trails with specific distances. For your getaway, you can focus on culture, exercise or attending an event. This also lets you choose accommodation based on what you want to experience during your trip.
Musicals, Half-Timbered Houses and Town History
The Tecklenburg Open-Air Theatre uses its historic atmosphere as a setting for elaborate musical productions. Every year, it delights nearly 100,000 visitors from all over Germany. The Tecklenburg open-air stage is set within the ruins of a medieval castle and has more than 2,300 seats, 1,800 of them covered. The performance programme may vary; if you are travelling to see a musical, check in advance which show is scheduled for your preferred date.
The Doll Museum is housed in a historic half-timbered building dating from 1684 and is home to one of North Rhine-Westphalia’s most valuable doll collections. Alongside the Botsch and Nahrath collections, you can see dollhouses, toy shops and a wide variety of toys from past decades. Some works by the painter Otto Modersohn are also among the exhibits. The collection spans everything from toys of past decades to paintings.
The Legge Gatehouse, with its distinctive arched gateway, is centrally located in the Old Town. It was built in 1577 and, in 1660, was expanded at the behest of Count Mauritz of Tecklenburg to serve as a linen inspection office, known as the Legge. Today, changing art exhibitions are held there throughout the year; you can usually visit them on weekends. As the exhibitions change, it is worth checking what is on during your planned visit.
Spa Gardens and Trails Around Tecklenburg
The spa gardens are in a valley in the heart of the hill town of Tecklenburg. Facilities include a Kneipp pool, a medicinal herb garden and a boules court. At QR code stations, you can learn about the herb garden and footbath even without a guided tour; videos are also available on your smartphone. The park offers a choice of exercise, learning about the garden and finding your way around independently using digital information.
Signs in the Old Town point to the 4 km Witch Trail. It leads through the forest and offers children opportunities to climb; sturdy footwear is recommended. The “Witches’ Ride and Devilry” legends trail begins just outside Tecklenburg. Another option is the “Teutostadtschleife Tecklenburger Romantik”: a moderately difficult, 6.3 km circular hike starting and ending at the Burgberg car park. Check the route details before setting out. The different distances and the difficulty rating for the circular hike can help you choose the right trail. Tecklenburg is also part of the North Route Castles Tour in the Tecklenburger Land.
Plan Events and Travel
The traditional Tecklenburg Wine Festival takes place on the first weekend in September in the historic market square. Winemakers from renowned German wine regions with long traditions present selected wines there. The St Nicholas Market takes place from Friday to Sunday on the second weekend of Advent in the historic Old Town; the exact dates may vary from year to year. If you want to plan your trip around either event, check the dates for the relevant year.
For bus travel, take route R45 to the “Tecklenburg-Stadt” stop. The Teuto-Express also stops at Tecklenburg’s old railway station on its route between Ibbenbüren and Bad Laer. Check the latest timetables before travelling.
