Mining history, Lake Aasee and the sandstone formations of the Dörenther Klippen give Ibbenbüren a range of attractions for a trip. You can plan your stay around local history and culture, activities on the water, or hiking and cycling tours.
Mining and Local History
The Mining Museum explores Ibbenbüren’s mining tradition through machinery, tools and equipment used to support mine workings. The collection also includes miners’ documents, mine plans, minerals and fossils. As of August 16, 2026, the museum is temporarily closed while a new concept and location are being developed.
The town museum traces the history of the area, from early settlement to its development into a medium-sized town; special exhibitions are also held from time to time. Another way to explore the mining history is the themed “Glück auf!” walking tour, which follows historic traces of mining. The townscape also features landmarks from other periods: the ruins of the Heidenturm, associated with Ibbenbüren Castle, are near Lake Aasee. Construction of the present-day Christuskirche began in 1523.
Half-timbered buildings and Ibbenbüren sandstone shape the town center. It is considered lively and is well suited to a stroll and shopping. This makes it easy to combine a taste of town life with visits to historic sites and exhibitions; if you have a particular exhibition date in mind, it is worth checking the latest information in advance.
Lake Aasee: Circular Walk, Beach and Leisure Activities
A 2.7-kilometer circular path runs along Lake Aasee in Ibbenbüren, making it a specific option for a walk. The lake also offers a beach club with a sandy beach, sailing and other water-based leisure activities. The grounds around the lake are freely accessible year-round; temporary local restrictions may apply.
If you plan to use specific facilities, check their current condition on site: Lake Aasee has a skate park, a dirt-bike track and several children’s playgrounds, whose amenities may change. The lake is also a landmark along longer tours: a section of the Töddenland Cycle Route runs along Lake Aasee.
Dörenther Klippen and Trails Through the Countryside
The Dörenther Klippen lie south of Ibbenbüren, on the edge of the Teutoburg Forest. The rock formation stretches for about four kilometers, and its sandstone towers reach up to 20 meters high. Hiking trails run alongside the cliffs and into the adjacent Teutoburg Forest. Along the way, views open out over the southern Münsterland.
The Teutoschleife Dörenther Klippen begins and ends at the Dörenther Klippen car park in Ibbenbüren. Check route conditions before setting out. Climbing is limited to designated areas within courses run by Bergfreunde Ibbenbüren e.V. or VHS Ibbenbüren. Check course availability and climbing rules in advance.
Toboggan Run and Fairy-Tale Forest
For a different kind of outing, visit the Sommerrodelbahn amusement park: its rail-guided toboggan run is 100 meters long. The park also has a fairy-tale forest featuring twelve tales by the Brothers Grimm, water features and elements built by dwarfs. A 1,500-square-meter play area adds to the attractions. The toboggan run, fairy-tale forest and play area each offer a different way to spend the day.
Cycle Routes and Getting There
The 122-kilometer Töddenland Cycle Route is a circular route through the historic Töddenland region and passes through Ibbenbüren. Along with the section by Lake Aasee, the route runs close to the Teutoburg Forest and the Schafberg plateau. It also connects to the Dortmund-Ems Canal Route. Check current signage and the route before setting out on a cycling trip.
Public transport connections to the Töddenland Cycle Route are available at Ibbenbüren-Laggenbeck, Ibbenbüren and Ibbenbüren-Esch stations in Püsselbüren. Buses connect Ibbenbüren with Münster and Osnabrück, and regular train services run from Rheine and Osnabrück. Timetables may change, so check connections before traveling. To reach Lake Aasee, take the Ibbenbüren exit from the A30. The lake is about 1.3 kilometers on foot from Ibbenbüren station.
