Laer’s historic town centre can be read through its squares: the pond adjoins the Rathausplatz directly, the Kirchplatz surrounds the listed Church of St. Bartholomew, and another square is located by the Rathausschänke. Narrow streets connect the squares, which are all within walking distance of one another.
Townscape and Architectural History
Construction of the Church of St. Bartholomew began in 1485. The windmill by the Rathaus pond can also be dated precisely: it is a Dutch-style cap windmill, built in 1876 on the foundations of the post mill erected in 1812. The town centre therefore brings together buildings from different periods: the church, begun in 1485, and the successive mills built in 1812 and 1876.
Crafts and Art
At the Holsken Museum, visitors can learn about the history and craft of clogmaking. The Kunstgewächshaus Münsterland is an exhibition space showcasing creative works by artists of different ages. In this way, traditional clogmaking and displayed creative works offer two distinct points of interest. Check current visiting options in advance if you are planning to visit either venue.
Night Watchman Tours and Archaeology
On night watchman tours in Laer, participants hear anecdotes and learn interesting facts about the history of Ewaldi village and its historic buildings. The tours start at Rathausplatz and last around 1.5 to 2 hours. For current dates, the municipality refers visitors to Laer bewegt e.V.; check there if you are planning to join a tour.
One specifically named option is Night Watchman Tour 2. It follows the Ewaldibach stream and passes the Alte Möllersfabrik and the Heidenbaum, described as Laer’s best-known tree. The route thus connects several named places with a tree landmark regarded as particularly well known.
Oldenborg lies about 2 km west of the town centre. Three rings of ramparts survive in the present-day forest area of Borg; they belonged to a fortification dating from the 5th century, which was abandoned around 1050. The focus thus shifts from the town’s squares and historic buildings to an archaeological site spanning a long period of time.
For 2026, archaeological walks at Laer Oldenborg were announced for 12 April at 2 pm, 9 June at 6 pm, 4 August at 6 pm, and 11 October at 2 pm. Borg wardens Reinhard Fedder and Kalle Leismann explain the history and excavations, as well as legends and tales about the early medieval Borg. Places are limited, and advance registration is required. Check the current schedule with the organiser before making plans.
Further afield in Steinfurt
Laer is in the heart of the Münsterland. In the district of Steinfurt, the twelve NaTourismus routes offer another perspective: they pass through almost all the towns in the Steinfurt and Tecklenburger Land areas, are between 25 and 54 kilometres long, and are designed to help visitors discover local flora and fauna. The 100 Castles Route connects significant architectural monuments in the district of Steinfurt. These regional routes differ in focus from Laer’s local history: they centre on nature experiences and architectural heritage on a broader scale.
