Hörstel brings together monastery art, historic buildings, and time by the water. The DA Kunsthaus Kloster Gravenhorst offers a way to experience contemporary art and the history of the former monastery complex. In Bevergern, the church and Küsterei tell of different construction periods and building types. At Torfmoorsee, water sports, a sandy beach, and a sunbathing lawn sit side by side. Equestrian sport is another of the options that shape the character of the town. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth considering which of these different aspects interests you most.

Art and Monastery History in Gravenhorst

With its church, convent buildings, mill, millpond, bakehouse and brewery, monastery wall, and historic bridges, the former Gravenhorst Monastery conveys the impression of an almost completely preserved monastery complex. The ensemble is therefore more than a single religious building: its buildings and other features allow you to experience the complex as a connected place.

For more than ten years, the DA Kunsthaus Kloster Gravenhorst has offered a space to experience contemporary, interdisciplinary art and culture through participation and reflection. Its approach combines artistic offerings with active involvement and engagement. Guided tours cover the monastery’s history and its art; there are also theatrical tours featuring historical figures. These take place on the first and third Sunday of every month. Group tours can be booked by arrangement. If you would like to plan for a particular tour, you can check the date in advance.

Architectural History in Bevergern

St. Mary’s Parish Church is a late Gothic hall church with a polygonal choir dating from the 15th century and a richly furnished interior. Its construction history also spans several phases: in 1686, the tower was raised using dressed stone from Bevergern Castle, which had been demolished in 1680. Further additions followed in 1759, 1767, and 1937. These different dates show how the church’s appearance developed over a long period.

The Küsterei offers another perspective on Bevergern’s architectural history. This half-timbered house with a hipped gable roof dates from 1663 and is one of the oldest houses in Bevergern. As a former farming household’s home, it has a large Deele (central hall) behind the entrance gate. The church and the Küsterei thus represent different architectural forms and historic functions: a late Gothic church building with later additions, and an older house with a Deele.

Water, Recreation, and Equestrian Sport

The Torfmoor recreational area covers 57 hectares and includes the lake of the same name, Torfmoorsee. You can sail, fish, and surf on the lake. A sandy beach and a sunbathing lawn offer space to sunbathe and relax. This lets you choose between activities on the water and a quieter break by the lake. Conditions for water sports may vary; check the specific options before your visit.

Another option is the Riesenbeck International equestrian center in Hörstel, which offers training and equestrian competitions. For travelers interested in equestrian sport, this provides a different focus from the cultural history of Gravenhorst or the activities at Torfmoorsee.

Landscape and Choosing Accommodation

Hörstel’s landscape is shaped by the transition from the Münsterland Park Landscape to the Teutoburg Forest; it also includes the 95-meter-high Huckberg. This landscape adds another dimension to choosing a destination, alongside the specific cultural and recreational offerings.

If you are looking for a hotel in Hörstel, your personal interests can help guide your choice: would you like to spend most of your time exploring art and monastery history, looking at Bevergern’s architectural styles, planning activities by the lake, or focusing on equestrian sport? The offerings differ in nature and do not require a one-size-fits-all itinerary. First decide which theme matters most to you during your stay, then use it to guide your next choices.
