In Gütersloh, you can shape your stay around green spaces, culture or cycling. Mohns Park combines recreational facilities with an open-air stage; the Botanical Garden is divided into eight themed gardens. The Dalke Water Experience Trail offers a different focus: its 20 stations explore water and its ecological, economic and diverse uses.

Parks, Gardens and Open-Air Culture

Mohns Park offers play, sports and recreational facilities for all age groups. Its amenities include mini golf, sports and tennis courts, a playground and a water-treading pool. They are still there, though some have changed. If you plan to use specific facilities, check how they are currently being used before your visit.

Culture is also part of the park: the open-air stage hosts events under the open sky. In summer, for example, concerts or film screenings take place there, including as part of the annual “Gütersloh Summer.” The seasonal programme may vary; check the event details for a specific date.

The themes of the Gütersloh Botanical Garden are spread across a total of eight themed gardens. Garden enthusiasts can also join tours run by the Apothekergarten Gütersloh Friends Association. They start at 11 a.m. in front of the entrance to the Palm House Café; advance registration is not required. As details about the programme may have changed, it is a good idea to check before your visit.

City History, Technology and Architecture

Numerous objects at the City Museum illustrate what everyday life in Gütersloh was like several decades ago. The museum is housed in the former warehouse of the Angenete & Wulfhorst grain merchants: the ground floor explores the textile and metal industries, while the upper floor focuses on medical history. Guided tours are available on weekdays by prior appointment. Check the current visiting arrangements in advance.

The Miele Museum offers a different perspective on technology and company history. It is located at Miele’s corporate headquarters and covers 750 square metres. Alongside documents on the company’s history, it displays around 200 items from the company’s production. The objects on display may change.

The historic Veerhoffhaus is a half-timbered building that defines the townscape and has been constructed in several phases. Together with the ensemble around Kirchplatzring, it is one of Gütersloh’s central historic monuments. Its different construction phases are as much a part of its architectural character as its place within this ensemble.

Cycling with a Specific Route Note

The Dalke Water Experience Trail can be explored on foot or by bike. One detail is important when planning your route in Avenwedde: between Station 1 at the Große Wiese nature reserve and Station 3 at Strang Mill, you need to leave the Dalke. The trail combines a nature-focused theme with a practical route note that you can take into account in advance.

The D3 cycle route passes through Gütersloh and is part of a European route network spanning more than 3,500 kilometres. Check the signage and local conditions before setting off. Cycling tours are also presented for Gütersloh and the region, along routes through the city, the surrounding district and the Teutoburg Forest. They offer opportunities to explore parks, historic sites and landscapes; individual routes may have different focuses.

The Mühlenstroth Steam Light Railway (DKBM) tells another story of cycling and technology: it built a circular railway with a 600-millimetre gauge on a property in Gütersloh. The route description offers a separate perspective on railways, alongside the cycling routes through the city and region.

Exploring the Gütersloh District

The Gütersloh district also offers its own natural setting. Since 23 March 1975, large parts of the district have been designated as landscape protection areas. Nature reserves are the strictest protection category there; the priority is protecting nature, followed by its use as a recreational area. Newly marked hiking trails in the district lead through the Senne landscape or the Teutoburg Forest and offer scenic views. This lets you choose between urban cultural and park attractions and regional landscapes when planning your stay.
