Borgholzhausen offers two clear themes for planning your trip: hiking and local history. The Hermannsweg trail runs through the town, and Ravensberg Castle is the ancestral seat of the Counts of Ravensberg. When looking for accommodation, you can first decide whether your trip will focus mainly on hiking, local history or the dates of an event. Local circular trails, historic sites and events offer different focal points, so you can plan your trip around your interests.

Hiking on routes around Borgholzhausen

Local circular hiking trails include the Entdeckerweg, Panoramaweg, Luisenturmweg, Schloss-Brincke Weg and Burg Ravensberg Weg. Another option is the challenging 13.4-kilometre Barenberg Circuit. It is signposted as a Nordic walking route and starts and ends at the Ravensberger Stadion car park. Check the latest route details before setting out, as information about the trails may change.

The Luisenturm on the Johannisegge is located directly on the Hermannsweg at an elevation of 291 m. Climbing the tower is free of charge. In September 2026, the tower was temporarily closed for repairs; check before your visit whether it has since reopened to visitors. This makes it easy to plan your route while checking current access arrangements, without assuming that the tower can be climbed.

A distinctive woodland landscape lies on the Barenberg, east of the Ravensberg-Barenberg nature reserve. Old copper beeches grow there, their crowns allowing very little light to reach the ground, so hardly any other plants grow beneath them.

Castle, local history and architecture

Ravensberg Castle combines a striking name with a clear historical connection: it is the ancestral seat of the Counts of Ravensberg. Tours of the keep, which offers panoramic views, are available, as are guided castle tours for groups. Ask the operator about current tour arrangements; access to the keep and a guided group tour are not necessarily part of the same offer.

Other places also tell the story of local history. The Bleichhäuschen recounts the history of sailcloth making in Borgholzhausen. The Kultur- und Heimathaus houses exclusively original artefacts from Borgholzhausen. Together, these places highlight local craftsmanship and a collection focused on the town. The Evangelical Church is one of the oldest churches in the Ravensberg region. Brincke Moated Castle is located in the district of Barnhausen.

Events and local cuisine

Every summer, PIUMER Bauerntheater e. V. stages a Low German-language play at the open-air and natural theatre in Borgholzhausen. The open-air and natural theatre in the Bönkerscher Steinbruch hosts, among other things, theatrical performances—including in Low German—and open-air concerts. If you would like to attend a performance during your trip, check the dates for your travel period: individual events and programmes vary.

Borgholzhausen has been known throughout the region as a centre of honey confectionery and gingerbread production since 1740.

Outdoor activities and little discoveries around town

The Generations Park on the Violenbach invites visitors to play, exercise and relax, and offers outdoor fitness facilities. It provides another way to stay active in town in addition to the hiking routes. The Kiepenkerl is a selfie spot where visitors can stop and take photos; hikers and cyclists pass it along their route. It can thus become a photo stop on your own tour.
