Marienfeld is best discovered through its former Cistercian monastery. The complex brings together a late Romanesque abbey church, a Baroque abbey building and 18th-century farmhouses arranged around the historic monastery courtyard. The monastery was founded in 1185 and dissolved in 1803; until its dissolution, it was one of the most important monasteries in Westphalia. The abbey church’s architecture influenced important church buildings in Westphalia and the Baltic region.
Monastery and historic trails
The 1,200-metre-long Cistercian Trail is a historic walking route around the monastery grounds. The monastery’s history is explained on 13 information panels. The complex can be visited as part of a guided tour. If you plan to visit, check the current tour options in advance.
The Prelate’s Trail in the wider destination of Harsewinkel offers a different perspective on the history of the monasteries. This circular hiking trail connects the three former monasteries in Herzebrock, Clarholz and Marienfeld. Along the way, you can also visit the monasteries and gardens in these towns. The Cistercian Trail focuses on the monastery grounds in Marienfeld; the Prelate’s Trail connects several former monastery sites.
Getting there and finding your way
There is parking and a bus stop at the monastery. Bus route 71 also serves the “Marienfeld Bürgerhaus” stop. Check the current timetable before setting off, and plan a monastery visit around the available guided tours. This lets you plan your journey and visit without confusing the short historic walking route with a guided tour.
More to discover in the wider destination of Harsewinkel
In Harsewinkel, St. Lucia’s Church offers another glimpse into the region’s architectural history: it is Neo-Gothic and dates from the mid-19th century. Its tower, built in 1904, is now a landmark of Harsewinkel. The wider destination of Harsewinkel also has a well-signposted network of cycling and hiking trails.
Harsewinkel’s natural landscapes include the Boomberge hills and Hühnermoor. The Boomberge nature reserve consists of former Ems sand dunes that formed at the end of the last ice age. Paths criss-cross the wooded area; the oldest are at least 150 years old. Hühnermoor is Harsewinkel’s oldest nature reserve and a remnant of a 4,000-year-old raised bog landscape. A visit in June, when the cotton grass is in bloom, is especially rewarding.
The trails also differ in length and character: at 1,200 metres, the Cistercian Trail is a short circular walk around the monastery complex. The 7.15-kilometre regional HĂĽhnermoor hiking trail runs through Marienfeld. These distances give you a clear guide when choosing between a walk around the monastery and a longer hike.
