Town centre and museum

Historic half-timbered houses stand alongside modern new buildings in Steinhagen’s town centre. In the Steinhagen Historical Museum, visitors can see exhibits on schnapps, Aunt Paula’s shop, the Steinhagen pharmacy and a football that was once played with throughout Germany. This selection brings together several specific aspects of everyday town life and the past; the football also adds a connection beyond the region. Check the current opening hours before planning your visit.

BĂĽrgerpark: paths and facilities

The Genuss hiking trail and the Genuss cycling trail both pass through BĂĽrgerpark. The park has freely accessible fitness equipment and a boules court. A large meadow is ideal for playing, and there is a balance game beside the stream. This means you can enjoy the park as part of a route or as a destination in its own right for exercise, boules or a play break. As park facilities may change, check the latest information before your visit.

Cycling and hiking trails

The Genuss cycling trail does not have a fixed starting point: it is a circular route, signposted in both directions throughout, and you can start or finish in any town along the way. This makes it different from two other trails with specifically designated start and end points. The “Schnapsidee und Herrengedeck” cycling route starts and ends at the car park at Brinkstraße in Steinhagen. The Bergweltenweg starts and ends at the car park at the Friedrichshöhe restaurant, Kaistraße 48, 33803 Steinhagen. In practical terms, you can choose where to join the Genuss cycling trail along its route, while the starting and finishing points for the other two trails are specified.

The Hermannsweg, the Genuss trail and the Bergweltenweg run parallel through the juniper heaths. For this section, it is advisable to check local trail conditions. The Leberblümchenweg takes a varied route through the Jakobsberg nature reserve. The “Schnapsidee und Herrengedeck” cycling route passes through the “Deterings Wiesen” landscape conservation area, where 32 breeding bird species have been recorded. This figure refers to the area and adds a specific connection with nature to the route description.

Outdoor pool and seasonal planning

The Steinhagen outdoor pool offers a different kind of outing: the swimming lake is surrounded by trees, has a sandy beach and is fed by the Pulverbach stream. It is open seasonally, and opening times also depend on the weather. Check the current opening conditions before your visit. If you would rather make a lake the focus of your day than head out on another trail, the outdoor pool is an option in its own right.

Regional context: GĂĽtersloh

In the wider Gütersloh travel region, large parts of the district have been designated a landscape conservation area since 23 March 1975. Nature reserves are the district’s strictest conservation category; their primary purpose is to protect nature, and only secondarily to provide people with places for recreation. The Barrelpäule is one of the oldest nature reserves in the district of Gütersloh and has been protected under the Reich Nature Conservation Act since 1937. This information adds a regional perspective on the landscape and nature conservation.
