Verden (Aller) combines cathedral history and a protected dune landscape with riverside paths and activities in the city forest. When choosing a hotel, it helps to have a clear focus: would you like to explore the historic old town and museum, plan a trip on the water, or look into nature and recreation trails? The themes range from architectural history to seasonal experiences in the wider Verden travel destination.

Cathedral History and the Old Town

Verden Cathedral was built in two Gothic phases: from 1290 to 1323 and from 1473 to 1490. On a guided tour of the historic old town, you can discover half-timbered houses, narrow lanes and the cathedral. This also allows you to view the building in the context of the historic townscape.

The Verden Cathedral Chapter House Historical Museum is housed in an elegant estate dating from 1708. Its three floors display cultural history and ethnographic collections relating to the history of Verden and the region. The Lehringen finds are presented in a recreated Stone Age elephant hunt. The museum collection therefore brings together local history and a specific Stone Age theme.

Recreation and Activities in Verden

Magic Park Verden offers magic shows; in its fairytale forest, the timeless stories of the Brothers Grimm come to life. Kletterpark Verden offers families a separate activity: children can climb from a height of 1.30 m, using a safety system. Check the height and supervision requirements before your visit. The climbing park also has a mini-golf course with twelve covered holes.

The Verden Dunes have been a protected landscape since 1930 and feature an adventure trail in Verden City Forest. Along the river, the Aller Riverside Trail is a cycling and walking route that follows the Aller between the North Bridge and the railway bridge. The city forest also has a riding trail network about 30 km long. The details vary by activity and location: the riverside trail follows the river, while the riding trails are in the city forest.

The MS Stadt Verden is based in Verden and sails on the Aller and Weser. Its trips include Aller-Weser cruises and excursions to Bremen. If you are planning a trip, check the timetable and seasonal operating schedule in advance.

In the Wider Verden Travel Destination

In the wider Verden travel destination, the Aller Cycle Route in Verden district forms a circular route between Verden and Rethem. Its route differs from the Aller Riverside Trail in Verden (Aller): the latter follows the Aller between the North Bridge and the railway bridge, while the cycle route forms a circular loop between Verden and Rethem.

The “Dune Area and Halse Valley near Verden-Neumühlen” nature reserve has designated hiking trails. At the transition from the northern slope of the Verden Dunes to the Halsebach valley, the landscape features complex, closely interwoven habitat structures, as well as distinctive character and beauty. Etelsen Castle offers a different focus: it was built in the Historicist style, has an original, well-preserved façade, and features halls, salons and corridors restored in the style of the period.

At Kulturgut Ehmken Hoff, two historic, renovated farmhouses serve as a cultural center and meeting place. A range of exhibitions is held there throughout the year, including a permanent exhibition of archaeological finds from the area. In the Historic Sheepfold Quarter in HĂĽlsen, ten stalls are protected as a listed ensemble; two are used as exhibition spaces for old agricultural and craft equipment. These can only be viewed from the outside. On baking days during the summer months, bread and butter cake are baked there in the traditional way. Visitors who are interested are shown the baking method and how the oven works. Check the dates if you are planning to visit for this seasonal offering.

From 15 March to 15 October, pedestrians and cyclists can use the Dörverden Weser weir to cross the Weser. The crossing is via stairs, with side ramps for bicycles. Check the current conditions before your trip.
