When planning a trip to the district of Verden, you can choose between cycling routes, a protected dune and stream valley, and historic cultural sites to set different priorities. When choosing accommodation, it helps to first decide whether cycling or architectural and cultural history should be the main focus. The seasonal crossings in particular are a practical detail to consider when planning your routes.
Cycling routes and seasonal crossings
The Aller Cycle Route in the district of Verden follows a circular route between Verden and Rethem. In the northern part of the district, the approximately 60-kilometre WĂĽmme Cycle Route runs through the WĂĽmme lowlands. It is part of the approximately 250-kilometre WĂĽmme long-distance cycle route from the LĂĽneburg Heath to the Weser. The cycling network in the district of Verden is fully signposted.
For cyclists, the ferry between Otersen and Westen at the Amtshaus allows the Aller to be crossed from 1 May to 3 October on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, shortening the cycling distance. Another crossing is provided by the Dörverden Weser weir: From 15 March to 15 October, pedestrians and cyclists can cross the Weser there. The crossing uses steps, with side ramps for bicycles. The periods and the specified access arrangements differ; check the ferry timetable when planning your trip and the current conditions at the weir before setting off.
Cultural sites and history
In Thedinghausen stands the Erbhof, built between 1619 and 1621 by Bremen Archbishop Johann Friedrich. The listed building is considered significant beyond the region and has a far-reaching presence. Its restored ballroom is used for readings and concerts. In the Historic HĂĽlsen Sheepfold Quarter, a total of ten barns are protected as a listed ensemble. Two barns serve as exhibition spaces for old agricultural and craft equipment; they can only be viewed from the outside. On baking days in the summer months, HĂĽlsen bread and butter cake are baked there using traditional methods. Visitors interested in the process are shown how the baking is done and how the oven works.
The Ehmken Hoff cultural heritage site consists of two renovated historic farmhouses that serve as a cultural centre and meeting place. Various exhibitions are held there throughout the year, including a permanent exhibition on archaeological finds from the area. The information centre for potash mining in Hülsen also gives visitors an impression of the economic boom at the time and everyday life during that period: objects, tools, salt core samples, miners’ clothing, pictures, plans and graphics are on display. At the Wolfcenter Dörverden, approximately one-hour guided tours offer insights into the biology and ecology of wolves; feeding demonstrations are also part of the programme.
In Barme, a hill surrounded by a ditch marks the site where a medieval motte with a half-timbered tower once stood. The windmill in Dörverden was renovated with heritage conservation in mind and restored to working order. These two sites offer additional, distinct ways to explore the district’s history alongside its exhibition venues.
Dune landscape and unique insights
The “Dune Area and Halse Valley near Verden-Neumühlen” nature reserve is characterised by complex, closely interconnected habitat structures. They occur where the northern slope of the Verden dunes meets the Halse stream valley. The area has a distinctive character and natural beauty; designated hiking trails allow you to explore the landscape on foot.
A reconstruction in Diensthop offers an unusual glimpse inside a burial mound. Visitors can look into its interior. A vertical section wall bisects the mound, with a massive oak log coffin in front of it. The combination of the exposed mound profile and the coffin makes this a tangible addition to the exhibitions and historic buildings.
Choosing a focus when looking for accommodation
When looking for accommodation for a stay in the district of Verden, you can first decide what to focus on: cycling routes and crossings, cultural sites or hiking trails. This lets you choose accommodation based on the destinations you actually plan to visit, without having to follow a fixed circular route. For days spent cycling, it is worth factoring the seasonal crossings into your plans.
