Local highlights range from the Wümme lowlands and the views from Mühlenberg to swimming, cycling, hiking and art. When planning, you can consider whether you mainly want to explore the landscape, spend time outdoors, or learn about art and local history.

Wümme lowlands, dune ridge and far-reaching views

The Wümme lowlands are part of Ottersberg and are crisscrossed by numerous waterways. A different type of landscape can be found near Fischerhude: the village lies on a long dune ridge between branches of the Wümme. From Mühlenberg, far-reaching views extend towards the moorland, Teufelsmoor, Weyerberg and Bremen’s skyline. How far you can see these places depends on the weather.

These different landscapes sit side by side: waterways in the lowlands, the dune ridge near Fischerhude and a viewpoint overlooking the surrounding area. If you want to focus on nature, you can use these features to guide your choices without following a set route.

Swimming in the lake or indoor pool

Otterstedter See, also known as Pastorensee, is a popular place for swimming. Swimming conditions can vary seasonally. The Verden district health authority regularly monitors the water quality; check the latest results before swimming.

Another swimming option in Ottersberg is the Otterbad indoor pool, with a pool measuring 25 by 12.5 metres. The lake and indoor pool differ in the type of bathing spot: one is a lake, the other an indoor pool with known dimensions. If you plan to visit the Otterbad, check its current opening hours separately.

Cycling and hiking

Ottersberg has a well-developed, well-signposted cycling network away from main roads. The cycle route signs lead through partly unspoilt natural landscapes and to local attractions. Signage and route conditions can change, so take this into account when planning your route.

The local hiking programme lists two different routes: one runs from Ottersberg towards Posthausen through the Ottersberg Moor. The other connects Ottersberg ZOB with Otterstedt Nord and crosses the Otterstedter Beeke on its way towards the Wümme. This gives you one tour with a moorland section and another whose description names the Beeke and Wümme as landmarks.

Art, everyday history and historic buildings

The Otto Modersohn Museum in Fischerhude was founded in 1974 to make Otto Modersohn’s artistic estate accessible to the public. The collection includes paintings, drawings and written records from the artist’s estate. Bringing artworks and written materials together offers insight into different aspects of the artistic legacy.

Galleries in Fischerhude also show works by artists from the first generation as well as contemporary artists. Exhibitions may change, so check what is currently on show before visiting. The Heimathaus Irmintraut offers another perspective on local life, displaying objects from rural household and working life, along with some traditional ceremonial objects and costumes.

Local historic buildings include the restored Galerieholländer windmill in Quelkhorn, which dates from 1880. The art collection, everyday objects and windmill each offer a different focus: from artistic and written legacies to evidence of rural life and a historic building with a recorded date.

In the wider destination of Verden, the Aller Cycle Route follows a circular route through the district of Verden between Verden and Rethem. The “Dünengebiet und Halsetal bei Verden-Neumühlen” nature reserve is also in the Verden destination. At the transition from the northern slope of the Verden dunes to the Halsebach lowlands, it features complex, closely interconnected habitat structures; there are designated hiking trails in the protected area.
