If you are considering an overnight stay in Achim, you can shape your trip around several distinct themes: half-timbered architecture and local history, art in public spaces, a long-standing weekly market, or routes along the Weser. In the Bauernviertel district are St. Lawrence’s Church and the Clüverhaus; the area around these two buildings is known as the “old village.” Achim also has around 17 kilometers of the Weser Cycle Route, as well as the windmill, a local landmark.

Bauernviertel and the old village

St. Lawrence’s Church is the oldest building in the city of Achim; it was first mentioned in a document in 1257. It is located in the Bauernviertel district. Together with the Clüverhaus, it is a focal point of the area known as the “old village.” The Clüverhaus is a typical Lower Saxon two-post half-timbered farmhouse dating from 1824. It now houses a café; check whether it is open before visiting. Opening hours are listed as 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, on weekdays and weekends, for quiet prayer, lighting a candle or a moment of calm; check these hours before your visit.

A walk through the old village takes you past a Lower Saxon two-post house and an old farmstead. The guided tour can be booked for a date of your choice. This means you can also combine a visit to the Bauernviertel with a guided walk.

Windmill, art and local history

Numerous sculptures, monuments and fountains in the town center invite you to take an art walk. The Achim windmill is a 29-meter-high, two-story gallery smock mill with a thatched tower and is considered a local landmark. It has been open to visitors as part of mill tours since 1969; tours are available on request.

Achim’s history can also be seen in other places: the façade of the Riekes gingerbread factory recalls the town’s former gingerbread-making and cigar-making traditions. A small cigar-makers’ room is on display in the town hall. The historic Hünenburg ring-wall complex was built in the 11th century and is still largely intact.

Cycling routes and harbor

The Weser Cycle Route runs for around 17 kilometers along the Weser through Achim. The Lower Saxon Mill Route also passes through the town. At the Achim-Uesen marina, the boating club has six guest berths for recreational boaters. If you plan to use a berth, confirm availability before you travel.

Weekly market and trip planning

The Achim weekly market has a history spanning more than 100 years. On two days each week, more than 50 stalls along the pedestrian zone offer, among other things, fruit and vegetables, honey, asparagus, meat products, southern European fruits, smoked goods and hot food. The selection also includes wood-fired bakery products, seasonal goods, plants and flowers. If the market is part of your trip plans, time your visit to coincide with the specific market days.
