Neuenkirchen offers several distinct reasons to visit: the historic Schröers-Hof farmstead, exhibitions of modern art, routes to landscape art, and recurring and seasonal events. When planning your stay, it is worth considering the cultural offerings, festival and routes separately, as they follow different seasonal and timing patterns. This way, you can decide whether local history, a particular event date or outdoor activities should be the focus of your stay.

Art, Farm History and the Potato Festival

The Schröers-Hof is a reconstructed historic farmstead in the center of Neuenkirchen. The local history association has set up a local history museum in one of the farmhouses. If you would like to visit the museum, check the current visiting arrangements in advance.

The art association and the Springhornhof Foundation hold exhibitions of modern art in Neuenkirchen. Exhibition schedules vary; if you are planning to see a particular exhibition, check the current dates. Modern art offers a different cultural focus from the Schröers-Hof’s emphasis on local history.

The Neuenkirchen Potato Festival takes place every year on the third Sunday in September. Potato specialties include crispy fried potatoes, potato pancakes and French fries. The exact calendar date and program vary from year to year. If the festival is the reason for your trip, check the current edition in advance: the third Sunday in September provides the recurring time frame, while the program may change each year.

Routes, Sheep Herding and Seasonal Planning

A circular route of about 35 km leads to landscape art installations around the village; you can cover shorter sections on foot or by bicycle. This gives you a choice between the approximate length of the full loop and shorter sections. Check current route information before planning your route.

Another cycling route is the Schäfer-Route (Shepherd’s Route): it runs from Visselhövede to Neuenkirchen, where it reaches the Schröers-Hof. Unlike the circular route to the landscape art installations, it has a named destination. If you choose this route, check current route conditions before setting off.

At the Schäferhof, the shepherd brings the flock back to the barn. The process depends on the weather and the time of year.

From June to October, a guided sheep drive takes place on Wednesdays. Confirm the current dates with the local tourism provider if you are specifically planning this activity. Unlike the Potato Festival, which takes place on a Sunday in September, the sheep drive recurs on Wednesdays from June to October.

Heide-Shuttle Ring 4 runs seasonally as a circular route from Soltau via Neuenkirchen and other places, returning to Soltau. As the bus runs seasonally, check the current service information and timetable before planning a trip.
