Extensive forest areas surround much of Bomlitz, giving the town a distinctly wooded character. Alongside this landscape, historical themes relating to EIBIA and Wolff & Co. shape plans for a visit. To choose a focus, you can ask yourself whether you would rather explore individual historical sites or spend time on trails through the landscape. Bomlitz offers different options: the History and Remembrance Trail, buildings connected with Wolff history, and circular routes in the surrounding area.
Forests and Trails with Historical Connections
The EIBIA History and Remembrance Trail uses 15 information boards to introduce individual sites in EIBIA. You can start the trail at the Fuhrenkamp bunker, the filter and pumping station, or the Borg parking lot. The boards give the route a historical focus, while the three starting points offer practical guidance for planning your visit. The trail therefore does not focus on a single building, but on several sites.
The Eibia/Lohheide landscape area lies south of Benefeld and Bomlitz, close to Bomlitz. Four marked circular hiking trails pass through the area; an archaeological circular trail also runs there. The Borg burial mounds in Lohheide, likewise close to Bomlitz, date from 1200 to 1500 BC. Alongside the marked routes, the area thus offers archaeological points of interest: the circular trail explores them, and the burial mounds provide a clearly dated historical connection.
Wolff History and Historic Buildings
The Old Wolff Administration Building housed the offices and laboratories of Wolff & Co. Its sightline is aligned with the Wolff monument at the estate. The estate area was also home to the original settlement core from which Bomlitz later developed. This place therefore brings together an architectural detail and an important connection to the town’s history.
The Africa House has a different story: it was intended as a prefabricated building for the Wolff settlement in Tanzania, but could not be taken there and remained in Bomlitz. Together with the Old Administration Building, it reveals another side of Wolff history: a planned construction project and a journey that never took place.
In Benefeld, close to Bomlitz, stands the Cordingen Mill, an exemplary restored watermill complex. It is considered one of the most valuable historic buildings in the Heidekreis district. Important for planning your visit: the mill is open only during events. FORUM Bomlitz offers guided tours, hikes, and cycling trips on various themes. If one of these types of tours is important to you, check in advance which dates fall within your travel period.
Planning Your Visit
Bomlitz outdoor swimming pool is currently undergoing extensive renovations and is expected to reopen in 2026. If you are planning to go swimming, check its current status in advance.
In the broader destination of Walsrode
Walsrode Abbey is located on the Jacobusweg Lüneburger Heide pilgrimage route and offers public guided tours about its more than 1,000-year history and the present-day life of its Christian women’s community. From April 1 to October 31, tours take place daily at 3 p.m., except Mondays. As the schedule may change, check the current dates before planning your visit.
The Rischmannshof Heath Museum in Walsrode illustrates the development of rural life in the Lüneburg Heath. The top floor houses a section on local history and a Hermann Löns room. A granary with an external staircase dating from 1669 was relocated to the museum. The bakehouse from Südkampen, built in 1752, is the centerpiece of the annual baking days.
The “Löns” circular hiking trail (RWW 8) is 16 kilometers long and runs from Walsrode via the Löns grave, Tietlingen, and Meinerdingen, before returning to Walsrode. Trail conditions may vary; check them before setting out.
