Behringen offers several reasons to visit: Brunausee, the restored heathland and the burial mound site on the edge of the village. When looking for accommodation, you can decide whether water, hiking, cycling or local history should shape your stay.

Brunausee and the history of the heathland

Brunausee covers 70,000 square metres and lies at the entrance to the village in idyllic, wooded surroundings. It was artificially created in the 1980s and is now a popular destination for walks and relaxation by the water. Four pedal boats can be hired through Café Seeterrasse.

The Behringen Seefest is also held at Brunausee on the first weekend in August. Highlights include spectacular illuminated water displays followed by a high-altitude fireworks display. If you would like to include the festival in your stay, check the programme for the relevant year.

Behringen Heath is a restored area of heathland on the edge of the village. It was once part of a military training area used by the British Armed Forces and was handed over to Verein Naturschutzpark in 1994. Volunteers and the Behringen tourism association restored the area. Its history offers another way to explore the landscape: today’s heathland is connected with its former military use and its restoration after the handover.

Hiking and cycling

Behringen Heath begins just behind the car park on Haverbecker Straße, around 500 metres from the edge of Behringen. From this car park, the Heideweite hiking trail follows paths through the heathland, a small patch of woodland and past a historic sheepfold. The destination is the heathland area on Wulfsberg. The route therefore takes you through a sequence of different landscape features, rather than simply around a single viewpoint.

For cycling, the Behringen Heath Tour is a 21.26-kilometre circular route that starts and ends in Behringen. Behringen Burial Mound Heath also has an accessible circular path of around 400 metres. Check the route details before setting out.

Behringen lies on Ring 2 of the Heide-Shuttle, which is valid from 3 July 2026. The route runs between Tostedt, Handeloh, Undeloh, Egestorf and Oberhaverbeck. On this route, the shuttle carries bicycles free of charge to places of interest or to starting points for cycling and hiking tours. Check the seasonal timetable details before travelling.

The Behringen burial mound site, with at least 27 burial mounds of various sizes, lies on the edge of the village. It offers a different focus from the paths through the heathland, with a tangible record of local history at its heart. In the centre of Behringen, the village park with its heath garden offers seating, a boules court and a chessboard.

Local attractions and things to focus on during your stay

Regional products are another reason to visit: Landschlachterei Hermann Meyer invites you to try delicacies made from Heidschnucken sheep raised in the Lüneburg Heath Nature Reserve. The meat has been processed there since 1928 using recipes refined over generations. Check opening details before your visit.

There are different ways to explore the area: the accessible circular path of around 400 metres in Behringen Burial Mound Heath and the 21.26-kilometre circular cycle route that starts and ends in Behringen. Whether you give greater priority to these routes, the lake or local history can help you decide whether Behringen is the right place to stay during your trip.
