The chapels and the Böhmeaue highlight different aspects of Böhme: architectural history and protected landscapes. If you’re looking for hotels in Böhme, these topics can help you decide what to focus on during your stay. The wider Heidekreis travel destination offers other distinct cultural and natural attractions.

Chapels with their own architectural history

The chapel at Böhme 3 was built and consecrated in 1716. It stands at the end of the original western driveway to the farm. This solid, octagonal central-plan building has a mansard roof covered with tiles above a sandstone base. A wooden dome spans the interior. Features dating from its construction include a gallery running around the interior, simple pews and a wooden pulpit altar. A family crypt is located in the basement.

The St. Vitus Chapel in Bierde dates from a different period. It was built in 1861 to a design by Hanoverian architect Conrad Wilhelm Hase (1818–1902). Its original furnishings from the time of construction have been preserved. In 1891, a small, single-manual organ by Furtwängler and Hammer was added; it is located on a wooden gallery in the north transept. This makes it possible to distinguish the chapel’s construction date from the later addition: 1861 marks the construction of the chapel, and 1891 the organ.

The Böhmeaue and river regulations

The Böhmeaue Landscape Protection Area covers approximately 1,712 hectares and includes, among other places, the municipality of Böhme, specifically the cadastral districts of Bierde and Böhme. It also includes FFH site No. 77, “Böhme.” The area figure refers to the landscape protection area as a whole; Bierde and Böhme are the cadastral districts within the municipality named here.

On the stretch of the Böhme River from Bad Fallingbostel to the village of Böhme, a narrowly defined rule applies during the closed season from 1 March to 15 July: upon request, the lower nature conservation authority may grant its consent for organised events, for example those run by schools and youth facilities, provided water protection is not adversely affected. This is not a blanket permission to go paddling. Before planning a paddling trip, check the current rules on the responsible authority’s website.

More cultural topics in the Heidekreis

For broader travel planning, the Heidekreis offers distinct cultural and historical attractions. The Hof der Heidmark in Bad Fallingbostel was built in 1642, dismantled in 1936 and rebuilt in Liethwald. It is a listed building and one of the oldest buildings in the Heidekreis district. Ahlden Castle was built on the Alte Leine in 1579 and is associated with the banishment of Electoral Princess Sophia Dorothea. Walsrode Abbey is the oldest of the famous heathland monasteries. Together, these destinations illustrate different historical connections: reconstruction, castle history and monastic heritage.

Landscapes and trails in the Heidekreis

Another distinct landscape highlight in the Heidekreis is Wilseder Berg, in the northern part of the region. It is 169 metres high and the highest elevation in the North German Plain. The surrounding area is almost car-free: cars can only use access roads to car parks at locations around the nature reserve; otherwise, visitors get around on foot or by bicycle. Check parking options before planning your visit. The Heidekreis also has kilometres of signposted routes for cycling, hiking, Nordic walking and horse riding. Individual routes may change, so it’s worth checking the specific route for the latest information.
