Buchenhain can be explored through a variety of discoveries: the Land and Art Trail passes through the village, alongside a natural cosmetics workshop and Laacky's Gold Mine in the district. Art, handmade products and treasure hunting each offer a different focus. When planning your visit, it is helpful to choose your preferred focus first, then decide on the route length or time to spend visiting.

A cycling tour with art and crafts

The Land and Art Trail follows quiet roads to studios, galleries, workshops, cafés and other sights. Buchenhain lies along this route. You can choose between routes of 18.5 or 30 kilometres, a difference of 11.5 kilometres. This lets you tailor the length of your cycling tour to your plans for the day. The destinations listed give the trail its focus on art and crafts: it combines exercise with a range of cultural and craft-related themes and takes you to several different kinds of destinations.

Handmade natural cosmetics

Anke Thoma's natural cosmetics workshop welcomes visitors at Buchenhain 34 from Monday to Friday, 08:00–16:00, and on Saturdays, 11:00–16:00. Check visiting hours before you travel. Handmade soaps, shampoos, face creams and deodorant cream are produced here; the plant-based natural soaps are made by hand using the cold process. The difference between weekdays and Saturdays is useful to bear in mind when planning your visit: the stated visiting hours begin three hours later on Saturdays, while they end at 16:00 on both weekdays and Saturdays.

Treasure hunting in the Buchenhain district

Laacky's Gold Mine in the Buchenhain district gives children and adults the chance to search for hidden “treasures” like treasure hunters. The focus here is on the search itself. This sets the activity apart from the art and craft themes of the Land and Art Trail: instead of focusing on studios, galleries or handmade products, it is all about searching. This gives you a choice of activities to suit different interests during your stay.

Historic buildings and chapel

As of 1 January 2025, the estate workers' house with its outbuilding at Buchenhain 23 is listed as a historic monument under number 09131216. The ensemble of buildings thus offers a point of reference for local history and culture. Together with the art and craft themes of the Land and Art Trail, it offers a different perspective on Buchenhain than the workshop and its cosmetic products.

The chapel in Mellenau has its own history: it was built in 1906, consecrated in 1907 and extensively renovated between 1990 and 1994. The chapel, which belongs to the municipality, is used for romantic weddings; concerts are also held there occasionally. If you are interested in the chronology, you can consider the construction, consecration and renovation as three distinct stages. Its uses include weddings and occasional concerts.
