A working furnace at the lively glass museum gives Baruther Glashütte a special contemporary relevance: the settlement is also a monument of European significance, and traditional workshops produce unique pieces and small series. In Teltow-Fläming, these insights into craftsmanship sit alongside urban, technological and regional history. When planning a trip, you can organise your discoveries according to your interests: glass and production, historic ways of life, or getting active on the trails.
Glass, Monasteries and Urban History
The museum in the Mönchenkloster in Jüterbog presents regional archaeology, the history of the Reformation and the city’s military history across three floors. Jüterbog’s historic old town is also one of its visitor attractions. Archaeological finds, urban history and a historic townscape thus offer different ways to explore the area.
At Kloster Zinna, monastic history and craftsmanship meet: the former Cistercian monastery is a visitor attraction; the monastery museum and demonstration distillery connect the history of the Cistercian Order with demonstrations of how the essences for the herbal liqueur “Klosterbruder” are made. The weaving museum offers a different craft focus, with historic handlooms, textile art and practical demonstrations. Visitors interested in literature can find a permanent exhibition on Fontane’s “Wanderings through the Mark Brandenburg” at the Theodor Fontane Cabinet.
Technology, Art and Everyday History
The MUST – Museum of Urban History and Technology in Ludwigsfelde covers the city’s history, vehicle construction and engines. The Oskar Barnack Museum in Lynow explores the history of photography: it is dedicated to the inventor of the Leica 35 mm camera and its associated 24 × 36 mm 35 mm film. In Wünsdorf-Waldstadt, the NEUE GALERIE presents changing exhibitions spanning various genres of contemporary art.
Visitors interested in rural life can compare different historical periods. The Blankensee Farm Museum is housed in a Märkisches Mittelflurhaus, a central-corridor farmhouse dating from 1649, and depicts village life at that time. The Jänickendorf Museum Barn showcases rural life over the past 200 years, including historic household items and agricultural equipment. The Dahme/Mark Local History Museum focuses on the crafts and folklore of the Lower Fläming; its collections include animal traps and Fläming traditional costumes.
Individual themes also offer insights into regional and historical contexts: the Großbeeren Memorial Tower depicts the liberation movement around 1813 and includes, among other things, a diorama of the Battle of Großbeeren. The Red Cross Museum in Luckenwalde provides an overview of the Red Cross’s nearly 150-year history in the region.
Cycling, Skating and the Landscape
For skating, the Jüterbog Skate Arena is located right next to the Fläming-Skate and attracts elite athletes from all over Europe. Teltow-Fläming district maintains and regularly cleans the Fläming-Skate; nevertheless, check route conditions before setting out. As a separate reference point for cycling tours, the district offers almost 600 kilometres of tourist cycling routes.
The FlämingWalk can be reached by train via the Woltersdorf and Luckenwalde stops. Check train connections before your trip. Teltow-Fläming’s landscape includes gently rolling ridges, wide valleys, protected areas, uplands and lowlands, where visitors can experience flora and fauna up close. The district also has a 30,414-hectare share of the Nuthe-Nieplitz Nature Park.
The twelve-kilometre Boden-Geo-Pfad trail through the Sperenberg gypsum quarries and Klausdorf clay pits focuses on a close-up look at the soil and landscape. Opened in June 2008, the trail provides information about the soil and the formation and use of the Sperenberg gypsum quarries. It is currently only accessible to a limited extent because maintenance work has not yet been completed.
