Trebbin’s local history has an unusually concrete starting point: the Mary Psalter, described as the oldest book in the Margraviate of Brandenburg, was created in Trebbin. There is also the architectural history of St. Mary’s Church, whose construction and organ can be placed in context using different dates.

St. Mary’s Church: architectural history and organ

The imposing, plastered hall church of St. Mary was built in 1740/44 on the foundations of an earlier building. The foundations thus point to an older structure, while the church acquired its present-day architectural form in the 18th century. This sequence offers a clear introduction to the building’s history without conflating the two construction phases.

The organ adds another layer of history. In 1905, an instrument from the workshop of the Sauer company in Frankfurt an der Oder was installed in the church. The Neoclassical organ case is older. The building, its predecessor and the organ’s history can therefore be viewed as distinct aspects of Trebbin’s cultural heritage; the Psalter, by contrast, focuses on the history of the book.

The Mary Psalter is a point of interest in its own right for anyone interested in historical books and the history of the Margraviate of Brandenburg. Its creation in Trebbin and its description as the oldest book in the Margraviate of Brandenburg give it regional significance. Together with the church, it forms a cultural-history focus encompassing both a book and the development of a specific building.

Cultural attractions across the wider Teltow-Fläming destination

Those wishing to look beyond Trebbin’s local history will find other cultural sites with a range of themes across the wider Teltow-Fläming destination. The Baruther Glashütte settlement is a heritage site of European importance. It is home to a lively glass museum with an operating furnace; traditional workshops produce unique pieces and small series. The museum and the crafts thus offer two different ways to explore glass culture.

Other museums focus on different topics: The Museum in the Franciscan Monastery in Jüterbog presents regional archaeology, Reformation history and the city’s military history across three floors. The MUST – Museum of the City and Technology in Ludwigsfelde explores the city’s history, vehicle manufacturing and engines. Those interested in the history of photography will find a dedicated subject at the Oskar Barnack Museum in Lynow: it is devoted to the inventor of the Leica miniature camera and its associated 24 x 36 mm film format.

Historic everyday life and crafts are also represented. The Blankensee Farm Museum is housed in a traditional Brandenburg central-hall house dating from 1649 and depicts village life of that period. In Kloster Zinna, the monastery museum and demonstration distillery combine the history of the former Cistercian monastery with demonstrations of how the essences for the herbal liqueur “Klosterbruder” are made. These examples differ considerably in subject, ranging from regional archaeology and technology to village life, monastic history and traditional production.

Landscape and outdoor activities in the region

The wider Teltow-Fläming destination encompasses gently rolling ridges, broad valleys, protected areas, uplands and lowlands. The district includes 30,414 hectares of the Nuthe-Nieplitz Nature Park. Cyclists can enjoy almost 600 kilometres of tourist cycling routes in the district. The district maintains the Fläming-Skate and cleans it regularly; nevertheless, check current route conditions before setting out.

The FlämingWalk can be reached by train via the Woltersdorf and Luckenwalde stops. Check train connections before travelling. Another regional route is the twelve-kilometre Boden Geo Trail in the Sperenberg gypsum quarries and Klausdorf clay pits. It was opened in June 2008 and provides information about soil and the formation and use of the Sperenberg gypsum quarries. As maintenance work has not been completed, it is currently only accessible to a limited extent; take this into account when planning your trip.
