Prignitz offers different glimpses into history: in Seddin, Bronze Age archaeological sites are visible above ground; in Bad Wilsnack, the late Gothic hall church of St. Nicholas stands in a medieval pilgrimage town. The visible archaeological sites have particular value for demonstration, observation and visitor experience. St. Nicholas is widely known as the Church of the Holy Blood. Inside are a wooden shrine of the Holy Blood from the 15th century with painted hinged doors, as well as medieval stained-glass windows, considered the most important collection of its kind in Brandenburg.

Museums tell stories of change

At the “Alte Burg” City Museum in Wittenberge, the story spans from a small farming town to an industrial city. Topics include the production of Singer and Veritas sewing machines and the transition from wartime to the GDR. The Steintor offers a different perspective: it dates from the 13th century and houses an exhibition about its former use as a prison, the Roaring Twenties and the Elbe in Wittenberge.

The permanent exhibition at the Pritzwalk Museum Factory focuses on industrialisation in rural areas. Visitors can also get hands-on in the museum print shop and hand-weaving workshop. Founded in 1905, the Perleberg City and Regional Museum presents key aspects of the cultural history of western Prignitz and the town of Perleberg, from the Stone Age onwards. At Meyenburg Castle Museum, a person from Prignitz serves as a guide through the exhibition on the region’s history in the 20th century.

Village life, a rectory and a castle

In BlĂĽthen, two museums offer insights into different aspects of everyday life: the Prignitz Village Museum displays an old classroom and products of traditional crafts. The Rectory Museum uses the parish archive, with records dating back to the 17th century, and the estate of Karl and Gerlinde GroĂź to convey what life was once like in a Protestant rectory.

Plattenburg is the only preserved moated castle in northern Germany and gave its name to the municipality of Plattenburg. Routes also converge here: the Berlin–Wilsnack Pilgrimage Route passes through Plattenburg, while the Bischofstour stops at the castle. In Blüthen, the church is a cycling church and lies directly on the 410-kilometre Elbe–Müritz Cycle Route, which connects rivers and lakes.

Explore the landscape on foot and by bike

The Brandenburg section of the cross-state “Elbe River Landscape – Brandenburg” Biosphere Reserve covers around 53,000 hectares and lies almost entirely within Prignitz district. One way to explore the floodplain on foot is the 14-kilometre Auenwildnis circular hiking trail. It passes through floodplain forests in the dyke realignment area.

Prignitz has 1,100 kilometres of designated cycle routes. In addition, there are 17 recommended cycling tours focused on regional attractions and the region’s special features. As route information may be updated over time, check the latest details before setting out. The Elbe–Müritz Cycle Route offers another point of reference: its 410-kilometre route connects rivers and lakes. The church in Blüthen lies directly on this route and is designated as a cycling church.

River trips and nature experiences

Experienced paddlers can take trips on the Elbe and observe wildlife in the biosphere reserve. The BUND Visitor Centre at Burg Lenzen offers guided canoe tours on the Löcknitz for families, adults and school groups, combining nature experiences with environmental education. Dates are arranged on request. The Visitor Centre at Burg Lenzen also focuses on the natural and cultural history of the river landscape, floodplain ecology, flood protection and the biosphere reserve. It also brings the town of Lenzen’s 1,000-year history to life through its cultural heritage.

Passenger boat trips are available on lakes and on the Havel and Elbe; there are also swimming spots in Prignitz. Some activities may be seasonal, so check the relevant dates before planning a trip. In Rühstädt, the NABU Visitor Centre features the “Globetrotter Adebar” exhibition about the white stork and a live broadcast of stork chicks being fed. The programme also includes project days for school groups, holiday programmes, village tours and themed events for different age groups.
