The monastery, riverside park and trails through heathland and forest give Marienfließ a range of travel highlights. Cultural history can be combined with nature: the monastery dates back to the Middle Ages, while the park, Spring Trail and “Gänsetour” cycle route offer different perspectives on the area. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first consider whether your stay will focus mainly on the monastery, nature experiences or cycling.

The monastery and regional heritage

Marienfließ Monastery was founded in 1231 by Johann Gans zu Putlitz and is the oldest Cistercian nunnery in the Prignitz region. The collegiate church preserves the coats of arms and epitaphs of the Prignitz noble families. Thus, alongside the history of the monastery, there is also a record of the region’s noble families. For those interested in cultural history, the monastery’s founding and the surviving family emblems offer different points of interest.

The monastery park on the Stepenitz

Marienfließ Monastery Park covers 3.5 hectares along the Stepenitz. Trees designated as natural monuments line the park. Benches invite visitors to linger, and the orchard offers opportunities to experience nature. The park is therefore a destination in its own right, in addition to the walking routes: its seating areas and meadow offer different reasons to take a break or enjoy nature.

The Spring Trail and Gänsetour

The monastery’s Spring Trail begins and ends at the bridge behind the collegiate church on the Stepenitz. It leads through heathland and forest to a quiet spring area. Both the starting point and destination are clearly marked, as are the landscape features along the route. The “Gänsetour” cycle route passes through Krempendorf, a district of the municipality of Marienfließ. The two routes have different local connections: the Spring Trail focuses on the bridge, collegiate church and Stepenitz, while the Gänsetour takes in Krempendorf. This makes it easy to choose between a monastery trail through heathland and forest and a cycle route through one of the municipality’s districts when planning your trip.

Dry grasslands and natural landscapes

In the Marienfließ Natura 2000 site, extensive areas of dry grassland and dry heath have developed on nutrient-poor sandy soils. These habitats add a distinct focus to the nature themes of the park and trails. Those interested in landscapes will find characteristic habitat types here as well as specific walking routes.

The wider Prignitz region

The Prignitz region also offers its own attractions for cycling and culture enthusiasts: it features 17 recommended cycle tours focused on regional sights and distinctive features. The Blüthen Parish House Museum offers a different perspective. Drawing on the parish archive, with records dating back to the 17th century, and the estate of Karl and Gerlinde Groß, it presents a picture of life in an earlier Protestant parsonage. Cycle routes and the museum represent different regional interests.

Choose the focus of your stay

Consider which of these aspects you would like to shape your stay, then compare Marienfließ with other destinations accordingly.
