Pritzwalk brings together local history and trails through forests and countryside. The town hall and market square are in the old town; Hainholz lies on the northeastern edge of the city. Museums, a short walk around the old town and various outdoor activities give your trip different points of focus. You can then choose whether to focus on architecture and industrial history, a walk or a seasonal visit.

Old Town and Traces of Industrial History

The market square is the heart of Pritzwalk’s old town and the setting for major events, including the Musical Spring, the Pritzwalk Festival, Autumn Lights and the Christmas market. Event dates may vary. The Neoclassical town hall, completed in 1829, also stands on the market square. St. Nicholas Church preserves remains of a medieval fieldstone building; its Neo-Gothic church tower is 72 meters high and dates from 1882.

Further traces of the town’s history can be found on Dömnitz Island: the cloth factory and brewery grounds are listed examples of 19th- and 20th-century industrial architecture. Kathfelder Mill, a protected technical monument, is preserved on the Dömnitz at the northwestern edge of the city. Remains of the ramparts north of the city recall medieval Pritzwalk.

Museums to Explore and Take Part In

The Pritzwalk Museum Factory explores the history of the town and its surrounding area, industrialization in rural regions, and the history of the brewery and cloth factory. Its offerings include interactive themed tours and hands-on activities in its own print shop and textile workshop. An observation platform offers views over Pritzwalk and the surrounding area. If you are interested in a guided tour or workshop, check the current program before your visit.

The cultural center has also been involved for many years in cultural and community events in and around Pritzwalk. These include children’s theater, family festivals, and music and dance events; the events and their dates vary. This complements the historical perspective with events that appeal to a range of interests.

Hainholz: Forest Trails and Nature Education

The 250-hectare Hainholz has an extensive network of trails. Several themed routes invite visitors to walk in the woods; a paved cycle path also leads to Streckenthin. For a different kind of nature outing, Hainholz has a petting farm with around 170 animals across 0.7 hectares. Animals include rabbits, sheep, goats, peacocks, ducks, ferrets and guinea pigs. Since operating details may change, it is advisable to check before your visit.

The Hainholz Nature Conservation Station combines a natural history exhibition with a forest education program. If you would rather go for a walk without this educational focus, Trappenberg, a small woodland used by walkers, lies south of Pritzwalk. There are several ways to enjoy the outdoors: themed trails in Hainholz, a cycle path to Streckenthin or a walk at Trappenberg.

Walks, Cycling and Seasonal Experiences

A green belt runs around Pritzwalk’s old town; the walk takes about 30 minutes. It is a short way to fit some exercise into your stay. For a longer bike ride, try the Pollo Tour: it is 38 kilometers long and follows well-maintained cycle paths through Pritzwalk and the surrounding area, passing fields, meadows and forests in gently rolling terrain. Check the current route before setting off.

The Pritzwalk blueberry plantation is another seasonal attraction. From early July to late August, visitors can pick blueberries themselves; the fruit is also sold in the farm shop. The season and pick-your-own availability may vary from year to year. If you plan a visit, check the details beforehand. The options are distinct: a short walk around the old town, forest trails, a regional bike ride or a visit during blueberry season.
