The Weisen wetland habitat

The Weisen wetland habitat offers a clear focus on nature: from the benches, you can observe fish, amphibians, dragonflies and other inhabitants of the ponds. A wooden table and two benches provide a place for a picnic; visitors can eat food they have brought with them there. Before your visit, check the condition of the table and benches, as the facilities may change.

Nature and trails in the wider destination of the Prignitz

In the Prignitz, the Brandenburg section of the cross-state “Flusslandschaft Elbe – Brandenburg” Biosphere Reserve covers around 53,000 hectares and lies almost entirely within the district of Prignitz. On the Elbe, experienced paddlers can take trips that include wildlife watching in the biosphere reserve. This is a different activity from observing wildlife from the benches at the Weisen wetland habitat: the Elbe trips are expressly intended for experienced paddlers. The Prignitz offers 17 recommended cycling routes that focus on regional attractions and distinctive features. The designated cycle network covers 1,100 kilometres. As network information may be updated over time, check it before making specific plans.

One specific cycling destination is the church in Blüthen: it is a cycling-friendly church and lies directly on the 410-kilometre Elbe-Müritz Circular Route, which connects rivers and lakes. Blüthen’s rectory museum and Prignitz village museum also offer different insights into life in the past. The rectory museum explores life in a Protestant rectory through the parish archive, which includes records dating back to the 17th century, and the estate of Karl and Gerlinde Groß. The village museum displays an old classroom and products of traditional crafts.

Cultural history in the Prignitz

In Bad Wilsnack, the late Gothic hall church of St. Nikolai stands in the medieval pilgrimage town; it is widely known as the Church of the Miraculous Blood. The church contains a wooden shrine of the Miraculous Blood from the 15th century with painted wing doors, as well as medieval stained-glass windows, considered the most important collection of their kind in Brandenburg. This church art offers a different cultural focus from the history of everyday village life in BlĂĽthen.

The history of towns is also represented in different ways across the Prignitz. The “Alte Burg” town museum in Wittenberge traces the town’s development from a small farming town to an industrial city, including the production of Singer and Veritas sewing machines and the transition from wartime to the GDR. The Steintor gate in Wittenberge dates back to the 13th century and houses an exhibition about its former use as a prison, the Golden Twenties and the Elbe in Wittenberge. In Pritzwalk, the Museumsfabrik has a permanent exhibition on the history of industrialisation in rural areas. Visitors can get hands-on in the museum print shop and hand-weaving workshop. Alongside church art and local history, the Prignitz therefore offers insights into crafts and industrialisation.
