In Markt Schwaben, local history and opportunities to get active go hand in hand. The historic town center and the local history museum offer different ways to explore the past, while the permanent “Quer durchs Schwabener Moos” walking trail is available in two variants. This lets you include local culture and a route of your choice in your travel plans.

Church and Historic Town Center

Markt Schwaben’s historic town center, with its notable churches and buildings, invites you to stroll and linger. Today’s parish church of St. Margaret offers a specific connection to the area’s architectural history: the plans were drawn up by Schwaben master painter Podtmeier, and the church was built by Schliersee master mason Zwerger between 1669 and 1672. As you walk through the town center, you’ll encounter both its general historic character and a church whose construction dates are clearly established.

Local History Museum and Opening Hours

The Markt Schwaben local history museum presents the town’s history in 14 rooms, from prehistory and early history through to the year 2000. This broad historical span differs from the precisely dated construction of the parish church and gives a visit to the museum its own focus. The museum is open on the first Sunday of every month from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. and on the third Monday of every month from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. You can therefore choose between an afternoon and an evening visit. Check the latest visitor information before you travel if you’re planning to visit the museum.

Walking Route Options and Cycling Route Nearby

The permanent “Quer durchs Schwabener Moos” walking trail in Markt Schwaben is available in 5- and 11-kilometer variants. These two route lengths give you a specific choice of distance; which option best suits your stay depends on how far you’d like to walk. No walking time is specified.

Another option in the nearby area is the Sempt-Mangfall cycling route, which passes east of Markt Schwaben and runs through the Ebersberg Forest. The local walking route options and the cycling route are different choices: the former offers two stated distances, while the latter follows a regional cycling route. The cycling route does not pass through Markt Schwaben itself.

More Experiences in the Wider Ebersberg Destination

If you’re also considering the wider Ebersberg destination, the observation tower in the Ebersberg Forest is one of its scenic attractions. Climbing its 169 steps rewards you with views across the entire Alpine foothills, from the Berchtesgaden Alps to the Allgäu. On exceptionally clear days, you can even see distant peaks over 3,000 meters high. This viewpoint offers a different focus from the walking route options in Markt Schwaben: here, the climb and panorama take center stage.

Since 2004, the Museum Wald und Umwelt has stood right next to the Ebersberg Forest in the wider Ebersberg destination. It explores the history of forest use and forest ecology. Also in Ebersberg, the Ebersberger Forst environmental education center is an institution recognized with Bavaria’s “Umweltbildung.Bayern” quality seal for events on education for sustainable development. Events are held mostly outdoors and in the adjacent forest; visits by school classes and other groups are possible. The museum’s subject matter therefore differs from the environmental education center’s events, which take place mostly outdoors.

Seasonal culture and food also add to the options in the wider Ebersberg destination. The Kirchseeon Perchtenlauf is a regular part of the run-up to Christmas and takes place every year in the market town of Kirchseeon. Masks, elaborate costumes, drums and bells are all part of the event. Herrmannsdorfer holds a large farm festival once a year at harvest time. It features specialties from the fire pit, porchetta, pastrami, bratwurst, freshly made Auszogne pastries and freshly tapped Schweinsbräu beer; the stables and workshops also open their doors. These annual events offer a different seasonal focus from the year-round local history and walking routes in Markt Schwaben.
